Am I the only one who finds the amount of general chit-chat and flames that
seems to have crept into this group recently rather intrusive.
When thanking someone for their contribution, surely a simple 'Thank you'
would suffice rather than starting an in-group 'hero worship' club.
Likewise, I am sure that my knowledge of and skills with VB.Net are enhanced
by knowing that so-and-so did a tour of various McDonalds outlets etc.
Having to wade through these types of posts to get at the 'nitty-gritty' is
getting beyond a joke.
I am sure that if one wants to carry on a social conversation then email or
some other medium is more suitable.
Love

Hi Stephany,
Did you read all the chit-chat? Did you read the entire sequence of flame and flame-back? If so, why?
If you didn't, you put into practice the principle of detecting off-topic and avoiding it. That's good. Get better at it.
It's a shame that it bothers you that there is a strong sense of community here. It helps us while we are helping other people.
Does that bother you? Would you like us to sit here for hours, answering people's queries for free, making sure that we stick to the
point and don't make a joke or "chat" to a colleague? Do you want us to be sober and proper so that while we spend our precious time
on other people, we don't waste <your> precious time?
Please make a note of the names of those who offend you and avoid reading their posts. This will save you having to do any
"wading".
If that's not good enough becaiuse you don't want to miss out on any juicy solutions, I suggest that you read the first reply of
any "offender" that follows a response post from the question setter. The threads don't tend to get chatty until the issue is dealt
with. If you see a sub-thread that dives off to the right you can be sure that it is community not question.
Stephany. You posted the following:
|| And this has relevance to a 'Tough SQl Query'?
You posted this after 6 levels of indentation. 6 levels after the question was clearly answered. 6 levels of obvious off-topic
posts. What are you doing reading so far in, if you don't want to be reading so far in!!??
Please be responsible for your browsing. Stick to the left hand side.
Please do not intrude into our community posts. These are over towards the right hand side.
Please do not waste my time.
Love
Fergus.
Stephany,
This post, is in your opinion "of topic" it has nothing to do with the
VB.net language.
So I disagree you post, if this kind of questions you are doing now, are out
of topic lets close the newsgroup.
When Herfried who contributes the most to this newsgroup is one day less
active than normal, he may describe that in his own words in this newsgroup.
And a post, who start with a special name, is not need to be read by others
(although allowed with the conventions we have in this newsgroup and you may
answered them.)
Fergus (he watches incoming questions in the night and did you know he lives
in London?), did made a long post already and he describes the motivation,
why this is done.
If he never had written to us in a chit chat that he lives in London, we
never had understood, that he was answering you at 7 GMT after a night
helping people and maybe a little bit tired.
I hope you understand it now and maybe you become a member of our community.
Cor
Hi,
I think this is the first chit chat that starts in the mainthread.
That means I think that we keep us good to our conventions.
Lets keep it that way and not make a chat room from this newsgroup and let
this be the last one again for a while.
Cor

No, you are not the only one. Some days ago I tols some of the other people
here that there are too many OT postings (including some written by me).
When thanking someone for their contribution, surely a simple 'Thank you' would suffice rather than starting an in-group 'hero worship' club.
LOL.
Likewise, I am sure that my knowledge of and skills with VB.Net are enhanced by knowing that so-and-so did a tour of various McDonalds outlets etc.
*g*. I have posted to this ng every day since February of this year, there
were ony 3 days without any contribution of me.
Having to wade through these types of posts to get at the 'nitty-gritty'
is getting beyond a joke.
ACK.
I am sure that if one wants to carry on a social conversation then email
or some other medium is more suitable.
I don't want OT postings at all, so I started to mark them as "OT:", but
others didn't do that.

Herfried,
I disagree with you.
See my post.
That doesn't mean that too in my opinion there maybe somethimes to much OT
post.
That cannot mean that OT post does not have a function.
It is not too others to mention post as OT and it has to be everyones own
dicipline.
This is an international newsgroup, and as far as I know with international
standards.
In some countries people is ruled by policeman. In my country (Europe) that
is not.

Herfried,
This is the result of a thread in this newsgroup.
There was maybe a lot of chat in it, but it had a good result, Anyways... thanks again for your replies.
ps. Please give me a decent name. NewbyDewby is too hard to type, moan,
moan,and I don't like abbreviating.
Ok... Names Bruce

Let's not kill this.

Hi,
I've got an old perl program running on my webserver - so old that I
haven't used a perl programmer in about two years :) (we've gone all php
for a variety of reasons). Anyway, I'm stumbling on a problem that I am
almost certain is a problem with my inputs to the script. The program
has a debug mode that is giving me some very weird results.
Here's what the script does: It takes a spreadsheet like this:

Hi,
Im looking for some general 'marketing' info on dotnet: how long it
has been in use (i.e first release date), how many companies are using
it, number of .NET developers in the world, popularity of .NET in
different industries, etc.
Ive searched on MS .NET homepage and googled it but surprisingly, such
general info are hard to find.

Someone posted this official proposal to create
comp.databases.postgresql.general again. He wrote his own charter. As
far as I know, he did not consult any of the postgresql groups first.
There may be an upcoming vote on this, so please stay informed and read
news.newgroups.announce for updates.
Also see message <2uu44nF2eodc0U1@uni-berlin.de> for an example of the
proponent's temperament.

I get a general network error when I try to make asynchronously call
ExecuteNonQuery on long sql statements that run in parallel.
Here is the background info on what I'm trying to accomplish:
I have a sql file with two long T-SQL batches, each of which contains about
50 thousand simple insert statments into 2 non-indexed tables. Batch 1
inserts into Table 1 and batch 2 inserts into Table 2, so they can run in
parallel. I parse each...

I'm not getting any reply to my previous thread so I'm stating a new one.
I get a General Network Error due to my SqlCommand object not having a big

this: Why does SQL generate a General Network Error instead of the Timeout
Expired Error? When I run my program multiple times, there are cases where
I'd get the Timeout Expired Error ("The timeout period elapsed...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
