why can't you declare new as overridable?

Hi.

I'm just wondering how come the compiler complains when
you declare a new sub as overridable but it then lets you
define multiple new subs with different interfaces,
essentially overriding each other.

For example, this doesn't work:

public overridable sub new()
end sub

public overrides sub new(byval x as string)
end sub

But this does:

public sub new()
end sub

public sub new(byval x as string)
end sub

Obviously, I can still do what I need to do, but I'd like
to understand why this is so.

Thanks,

skain

This doesn't make sense because constructors are not inherited.

Hi, I have a class that inherits from CollectionBase, and I'm trying to override its Count property. As per the documentation, this property is overridable - so I should be able to do this. So this is my code: Public Overrides ReadOnly Property Count() As Integer Get End Get End Property

In the asp.net pages below, Common.vb has an overridable Page_Load sub. In the consuming page, Two.aspx, the Page_Load sub is inherited, but for some reason it (Overrides Sub Page_Load) executes twice. In another "regular" asp.net page that inherits only from its own codebehind page, the page load only executes once as you'd expect. Any ideas why the page_load fires twice in the former example? Thanks,

I'm extremely frustrated with ASP.NET...again! To me this should be as simple as setting oCheckBox.Checked = True.. yet for some reason it isn't. I have a user control (ascx) that that has a checkbox and I can't get it to default to checked. I tried radiobuttons and experienced the same result.. can't start them as checked. The really frustrating thing is that I set the attributes of other input controls in the Init() with no problem. ...

I have a Public Interface defined in a class module. I also have a form that implements that interface After building the solution, I added an Inherited Form (inherited from the above-mentioned form) to the project via the IDE However, when I drop down the "(base class events)" list, I can't find the methods defined in the interface. I know the interface has been inherited because if I enter an "Implements" statement in the derived...

I have a simple form with a user control docked to the top (a panel, a picturebox, and 2 labels), a panel docked to the bottom, and a panel in the middle that has its docking set to fill. If I inherit that form, controls that I add to the center panel in the IDE "disappear" as soon as I build. The controls are not actually being deleted. The designer just isn't generating the code to add them to the panel's control collection. I tried...

I made a Usercontrol that must have AutoScroll set to true when it is used. So I set it to True in the Load event. However the property still shows in the properties window when the control is placed on a form. That's confusing. How can I make that property not show in the properties window?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any information on the performance impact of using functions declared as overridable? To Explain more fully; By default every function created in VB is NOT declared as overridable. However 90% of the time when creating resuable components/classes you don't care if the target programmer overrides the item or not. However, if you are the target programmer and wish to alter the behviour of

Hello, I have an overridable function in a base class (to do some basic database works) that gets inherited by many concrete classes. These concrete classes expands the work of that overridable function, my question is is why VB.net includes "Return" keyword in the concrete classes when the overridable function is called, i.e., I end up with two Return keywords, one for the overridable function and the other for the conrete class's...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
