Error when installing SQL Server 2000 - cannot configure server

Hi

I've spent ALL DAY trying to re-install SQL Server 2000 on Windows XP.
I continually get the error 'cannot configure server' just at the end
of the installation. I've tried the following:

- Removing SQL server from 'Program Files' folder following an
unsuccessful attempt to re-install, and entirely removing the registry
entry 'HKEY_CURRENT_U SER > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > MSSQLServer', as
well as the corresponding entry under 'HKEY_LOCAL_MAC HINE'. I've also
ensured that there is nothing left under
'HKEY_LOCAL_MAC HINE\SOFTWARE\M icrosoft\Window s\CurrentVersio n\Setup\Excepti on
Components'.

- Creating a different named instance of SQL server during re-install
(as opposed to the default)

- Have ensured that I have not installed Certificate Server (I know
that this can cause problems with SQL 2000 installation)

- Have tried installing MDAC components 2.6 SP2 and 2.8 (2.8 didn't
work at all, as I'm running XP. I did manage to install MDAC 2.6 SP2
but it didn't help)

- Have tried altering the desired SQL server authentication method
during install (i.e. altering between Windows authentication and SQL
authentication)

- Have tried installing SQL 2000 SP3 prior to installing SQL itself
