New to using databases that are NOT Access. New to MS SQL Server. I'd
like help understanding some concepts.

Firstly, I'd like to know how to connect to a database using MS SQL
Server on a remote web server using Windows XP; I know the IP and have
the username and password to connect...but what program do I use?
Suggestions, appreciated.

Secondly, I'd like to make changes to the remote database - anyone
suggest programs to use?

Well, what you want to do? It seems that most people that connect to
MS SQL Server from web servers uses ASP or ASP .Net, which means that
they use the ADO or ADO .Net libraries. Of course, this presumes that
you use IIS. If you are in the Java world, you can use JDBC.

But "program", that sounds a little funny. SQL Server comes with some
general query tools, but you would not call these from a web server.
Rather you write code to access the server from the web server.

Same here. Through code.

Hi, I've got an old perl program running on my webserver - so old that I haven't used a perl programmer in about two years :) (we've gone all php for a variety of reasons). Anyway, I'm stumbling on a problem that I am almost certain is a problem with my inputs to the script. The program has a debug mode that is giving me some very weird results. Here's what the script does: It takes a spreadsheet like this: Column1 Column2 ...

Hello all, I am fairly new to .NET, but not to VB. I have a couple of questions. 1. Shared Code Base I have a solution with several different applications within it. Many of the applications perform similar functions, such as checking data values for nulls, or building formatted strings. I have created a module (General Functions.vb) to contain these. However, when I add the module as an existing file to my project, .NET's IDE...

All I have some general .NET questions that I'm looking for some help with. Some of these questions (like the first) are ones that I've seen various conflicting information on, or questions that I'm not sure are specific anomolies that I'm having, or if they are specific known issues I'm facing. 1. In VB.NET, are arrays stored on the stack or the heap? Why must arrays of value types be boxed in order for them to be (effectively) passed by...

Hello everyone, I have some general questions about the DataTable object, and how it works. Moderately new to C#, I have plenty of texts describing the language, but not so much to reference ADO.NET objects (only the MSDN help files). I have written a C# Class Library that is responsible for encapsulating database information. All the objects work just fine for singleton record insert, update, select, and delete operations. But now we...

Hello I am intersting in developing and my background is VBA used in Excel and a brief intro to Java. I am interested in learning beyond VB and feel that C++ would be a very good language to get to know and give a lot of flexibility (if not tough to learn). I would like some advice on the merits of learning C++ versus C# or Visual Basic or Java for that matter.

Someone posted this official proposal to create comp.databases.postgresql.general again. He wrote his own charter. As far as I know, he did not consult any of the postgresql groups first. There may be an upcoming vote on this, so please stay informed and read news.newgroups.announce for updates. Also see message <2uu44nF2eodc0U1@uni-berlin.de> for an example of the proponent's temperament.

Hi all, I've read the WindowsVistaUACDevReqs.doc documentation and I have done different small tests on Vista to understand the bahaviour and now I have a few questions. 1) If I create a dummy console application that creates a file in Program Files directory, this one will succeed and will create the file b/c of the virtualization. But, if I do the following call in a console window (a.exe contains just

Scott M. Have your experiences shown you that programmers may give the best computer advice, analysis, and solutions even at the worst of times, for a PC user? ;~D Haven't crossed many Network Engineers, Network Administrators, System Administrators (there are a few I've crossed that do), that end up knowing an operating system, like Windows as a programmer ends up knowing it. Not giving excuses, maybe just an observation on why they...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
