Hi,
Please help, I'm getting desperate. Any ideas warmly welcomed!
I'm trying to read from a basic excel file (1000 or so rows from
column A) but am having problems. The code I am using is:
Declare @Return Int
SET NOCOUNT ON
Exec @Return= [master]..[sp_addlinkedSer ver] 'READ_XLS', 'EXCEL',
'Microsoft.Jet. OleDB.4.0' , 'e:\jsbackup\RA Codes.xls',
NULL, 'EXCEL 8.0'
print 'set up Return : ' + convert(varchar (10),@Return)
--NB E: is the drive as seen oon the server
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrv login
@rmtsrvname = 'READ_XLS',
@useself = 'true'
print 'login Return : ' + convert(varchar (10),@Return)
When I try to read from the (one) excel sheet in the file, via
Select * from [READ_XLS]...RACodes$
or to list what tables/sheets are available, via
exec sp_tables_ex 'READ_XLS'
I get the following error:
OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet. OLEDB.4.0' reported an error.
Authentication failed.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: Cannot start your application. The
workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another
user.]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet. OLEDB.4.0'
IDBInitialize:: Initialize returned 0x80040e4d: Authentication
failed.].
What am I missing?
*Many* thanks in advance.

A few things to check:
Do you have the .xls file already open?
Is e:\jsbackup\RAC odes.xls a server path?
I recall that you have to set named ranges for it to appear as tables
in Excel.
I don't know whether it helps but I have written an addin for Excel
that can push the data out from Excel (you are trying to pull it in
from the database). If you can reconsider your design and push it from
Excel you can perhaps use it.
SQL*XL is an addin for Excel that let you manage your database from
Excel. It is an end-user tool but it also lets you record all actions
as a macro (VBA) and therefore you can code/script applications with
it.
Have a look at SQL*XL at www.oraxcel.com

Hello
In order to perform a hetrogeneous join (I think that's what they're called)
between MySQL and another database, I've created an Access database
containing linked tables from each datasource.
I create the linked tables without any problems, clicking on "save password"
before selecting the desired tables. I can then access both tables fine from
within the Access GUI.

We recently translated the backend db from Access(97) to SQL Server.
We are still using Access frontends. I have an update query in the
Access front end that uses a lookup table to populate fields. The
common fields between the table and the lookup table are the primary
key (LocID) and date & time fields. The query is:
UPDATE tblPT_Offsets INNER JOIN tblPT ON tblPT_Offsets.LocID =
tblPT.LocID SET tblPT.Offset_ft = .,
tblPT.Salinity =...

Hello,
I've written an asp.net application that creates Excel documents. It
works by creating an excel document in XML format.
But I wonder if I'm reinventing the wheel. I know that there are ways to
read and write Excel files with ADO, but as far as I can tell, it
doesn't provide the flexibility I need. I need to be able to generate
tabs, cell formatting, formulas, etc.

Hi,
I have tried creating a linked server in microsoft sql 2000 to a db2
for vm database. I use a db2 v8 admin client, configure it via client
configuration setup and then in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 enterprise

datasource = mydatabase, product=my database, provider = db2oledb.
When I try to access the database via an openquery to the linked

I am using Excel/Access 2000 and have two large Excel files (25,000 rows
each) that I wish to create linked tables in Access rather than
importing into Access. The two source Excel files change frequently, so
I want to:
A) prompt the user, using a custom form, for the specific Excel files to
be linked;
B) create the links dynamically;
C) insert the linked tables into a select query grid and include the SQL
statement in the VBA...

Hi there,
I'm having pain with the VB behind an Access form. The form is used to
create reports in Excel based on the details entered in the form. This
has always worked without error on my machine (NT4, Access 2k),
however as soon as I attempt to create anything on another machine
(NT4, Access 2k) which most users will be working from, I receive an
automation error.
The problem line with the code is:

Hi,
I am having a hard time creating a Trigger to update an Oracle
database. I am using a SQL Server 2005 Express database on a Win XP Pro
SP2 desktop, linked to an Oracle 10g database on a remote Windows 2003
server. Both machines are on the same domain and very close physically
(<1ms ping).
I have set up the Oracle linked server in SQLEXPRESS, added the
login/pw information, and I can execute select and update queries

Hi,
I have a GridView control in page called eventslisting which is inheriting
from a MasterPage. The normal code to export to GridView does not work and
gives me an error - "Control of type GridView must be placed inside form tag
with runat = server". I understand that this is because my Masterpage has the
formtag and not the eventslisting page.
As a workaround I programatically created an HTML form, added runat=server
attribute to it...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
