Is there a way to tell PHP, "Spend 5 seconds trying to reach the
database, if you can't reach it, then load the file from the cached
flat file."
I suspect the answer is no. I'm tempted to rewrite all my code in
Java, just so I can have threads. And private methods. And private
class properties. And real encapsulation. And interfaces. And abstract
classes. And the ability to do anything.

So, at my place of employment, we use a national standard to transmit
data between certain applications. This standard consists of a fixed
width, flat file 4500-some-odd chars wide that contain 375-some-odd
columns (Not delimited). This standard is not changing anytime soon, so

Hi,
I was wondering if anybody knew of any other ways of efficiently
parsing a flat file into SQL Server 2000 using C#. The flat files are
tab delimited. And the general file size is around 1 GB so this code
has to be ultra efficient. Its a colllection of few flat files which
willl be mapped to a relational structure in the database.

I had to use use ssis 2005 in a short project recently & had little
time to work it out. I was importing a whole bunch of flat files into
SQL Server tables with many derived columns and transformations in
between.
It seems to automatically map columns from the flat file to columns in
