Is this normal

CK
Hi. Sorry if I am asking a stupid question since I am an absolutely beginner
in SQL Server. Here is the question . . .

About 13 hours ago, I got my SQL Server 2000 to index a table which has 104
million records. At first the CPU usage was high. But after an hour or two,
the process has seemed dead and the Enterprise Manager has had no response.
The CPU usuage dropped to zero and has been jumping between 0 to 5%. The
harddisk indicator has been blinking at a rate of roughly three times per
two seconds.

Is this normal? Has anyone got any idea how long the process would take? I
have assigned 1.8GB of RAM to the SQL service and is currently taking up
about 1GB.

Hi CK,

Two days for indexing? No, that's not normal.

Open a new window in Query Analyzer and execute sp_who2. I think that
something is blocking your indexing process.

Thanks for letting me know about this command. Otherwise I would have waited
forever without realising the process is in the state of "sleeping".

Hi CK,

But is it also blocked?

(Check the column BlkBy)

It's not blocked. After some testings, I realised the problem was caused by
insufficient free harddisk space for the transaction log file. It worked
fine after I created another log file in a drive with plenty of space.
Nevertheless, I was surprised that SQL Server didn't give me any warning
message about this.

I bet it did. But it sounds like you ran this through Enterprise Manager,
and there could be some hickup in this tool, hiding the error message
from you. Had you run the CREATE INDEX from Query Analyzer directly,
you should have seen an error message. (Or at least so I like believe. :-)

You absolutely are right about me using Enterprise Manager to index the
table. I guess it's now the time for me to brush up on my SQL skill!!!

Okay I tried some profiling, but am uncertain about the results I'm getting. They confuse the hell out of me. I have a test program (see below) that essentially has two loops that get called repeatedly. One that is an idle wait loop, and one that is a busy-wait CPU hogger. I wanted to see what profiling results that would give. The total runtime of the program is 10 seconds, where 5 seconds are spent in the CPU-loop and 5 seconds in the...

Hi, I'm new to WebServices, and I'm doing some tests (with a small VB.NET-application) to know the performance-difference between a WebService and the 'normal'-way of getting data (just connecting directly with a SqlDataAdapter to the SQL Server). The WebMethod simply gives a DataSet back, and does exactly the same actions as the normal-Method does. The difference are enormous in my opinion: 1 record:

Hi When toggling an element on and off by setting its display property via DOM access, display:none is valid for all kinds of elements, but I can't find anything about a generic value for toggling on again. Furthermore, UAs do not recognize the same values. To make a table row visible, IE wants display:block while FF wants display:table-row. Am I missing something? I am looking for something like display:normal

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
