Loading Flat File using DTS

I want to use DTS to load from a flat file. But I can't be sure when
the flat file will arrive. I would like the job to check every 10
minutes or so for a couple of hours. If the file is present, then load
the file and rename it so that it doesn't get overwritten. Any
suggestions?

TIA,

Why not create the DTS package as if the file exists, and if it doesn't let
the package fail!
Set up a job to run the package every x number of minutes, if the file is
there it will load
if the file's not there the package will fail and the job will execute again
in another x minutes.

Of course the last step of your package will be to delete the file after it
loads, so it doesn't
keep appending the info to the database.

We have several similar packages we run and just let them fail when the
file's not there, not
very pretty but who cares! It works and the import only takes 10 seconds
anyway.

You could put in an ActiveX step to check if the file is there - if it
is, the package continues, if not, then it returns, quits, logs an
error or anything else you want it to do. This article might be useful:

Hi all, I'm sure this is a popular question that comes up every few months here. Indeed, I've looked at some of the past postings, but I would like to ask things differently. Basically, I'm using a flat file to storing data. I have to do this because mySQL is not installed on my web server, and I am not the root user. The amount of data is so small, that it isn't worth a full-blown database anyway. However, while the data is...

OK I'm on a steep learning curve with XML et.al. and need some advice. I'm writing a B2B front door for a new application. I have multiple data suppliers all sending various formats of flat files. Most of the inbound files are CSV (but a couple are tab-delimitted and one is an Excel spreadsheet). The goal is to read/process/validate each file and to "transform" the data into a common, internal, file format which will by sent on to a...

Ok, I wanted to ask this separate from nospam's ridiculous thread in hopes it could get some honest attention. VB6 had a some simple and fast mechanisms for retrieving values from basic text files, which in turn could be simply and easily maintained with notepad. I understand the benefits of XML, really, but in the case of configuration files it seems it is almost always nothing more than unnecessary complexity, both in accessing them...

Hi, I was wondering if anybody knew of any other ways of efficiently parsing a flat file into SQL Server 2000 using C#. The flat files are tab delimited. And the general file size is around 1 GB so this code has to be ultra efficient. Its a colllection of few flat files which willl be mapped to a relational structure in the database. Following are the options I am looking at: 1. Using Datasets to read the data and execute one stored...

In my site I have a config table, (MySQL), with about 30 entries; the data is loaded on every single page load. This is not the only call to the db, (we do a total of about 8 calls to the db). As with many configurations settings, once the options are set the values will not change much. So I thought it would be a good idea to move the data to a flat file. I have written a small wrapper class to first look for the file, if it exists...

Hey everyone, this may be a stupid question, but I noticed the following and as I'm pretty new to using xml and python, I was wondering if I could get an explanation. Let's say I write a simple xml parser, for an xml file that just loads the content of each tag into a dict (the xml file doesn't have multiple hierarchies in it, it's flat other than the parent node) so we have <parent>

I am new to Visual Basic, my preferred languages is C or C++. I am trying to load a local database with data that I am reading from a delimited flat file. I have created the database tables and added all primary keys and a set of foreign keys. I have also created a Dataset for same. Now I was expecting that I could load the data set from the data that I am parsing from the flat file. Houever when I attempt to enter data into the dataset I can't...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
