Can an individual computer be configured contain both a SQL Server
instance & an MSDE instance?
Our software we charge separate costs depending if they are running on
a MSDE or SQL Server edition, and if they already have SQL Server
running (which they may have installed for some other application), can
we install our MSDE instance on the same machine?
And on the flip side, if they already have a machine that has an MSDE
instance, can the SQL Server install be done over top of that without
affecting the MSDE?
Thanks for any help,

You can install several instances of SQL Server of the same machine,
and that can be a mix of different editions, including MSDE.
What you cannot do, though, is to use the graphical tools from
standard/enterprise edition to access MSDE. Technically, it works
all right, but it violates the license agreement.

I'm writing an application using VB 6.0 as the front-end GUI, and the
MSDE version of SQL Server as the back-end (it's a program for a
really small # of users --- less then 3-4).
I'm trying to determine, through the Visual Basic interface, the
permissions of each user that's using the application on his/her
machine.
For example, let's say I'm user "Michael" that's sitting down at my
machine using the app. I've written. The security...

I have a problem that involves the error I receive when attempting to

fine. However, when I attempt to run the first stage of the app (the bound

I have developed a small application using ASP.NET and VB.NET on my
development machine it works great. When I copy across the files manually to

well except for a page with a datagrid that retrieves data from an MSDE
database (error message is detailed below). I have checked the connection
string and that looks good and MSDE is properly installed and configured on...

I want to create an application that can be used both for a
server-client model as well as a standalong application. The idea is to
write a general server-client application. The standalong then just has
both components on the same system. Now the question is if this is a
good approach or if this is even doable. For instance do web services
have requirements that would prevent them from running on a non-server
OS? Any input?

Hello, all, I started out thinking my problems were elsewhere but as I
have worked through this I have isolated my problem, currently, as a
difference between MSDE and SQL Express 2005 (I'll just call it
Express for simplicity).
I have, to try to simplify things, put the exact same DB on two
systems, one running MSDE and one running Express. Both have 2 Ghz
processors (one Intel, one AMD), both have a decent amount of RAM
(Intel system...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
