Implementing read-write locks

Hi,
I would like to use database locking mechanism to control access to an
external resource (like file system).
What I need is
1. an exclusive (write) lock conflicting with any access to the
resource (both for read and write)
2. non-exlusive (read) lock conflicting with writes only
How this could be done?
I'd appreciate any reply.

Application locks could be one solution - check out sp_getapplock in Books

I am taking a second programming course in Java and am currently attempting to apply what I have learned using Python instead. One thing that is puzzling me is how to use an iterator. I am writing a module containing everything I'd need for canonical linked lists. One particularly useful feature would be to use a for loop over the whole structure. For this I have learned the benefits of iterators. I have read a few book entries on Python...

Hi, I am currently working as an Analyst on a .NET Web Project using ASP.NET and C#.NET. I have a couple of, at least what should be, quick questions: 1. My understanding of UML says that the Controller classe of a Sequence Diagram should be implemented as a private class within a component. However, my Programmer has said that since the ASP code lives outside the

I am working on a project for work where I need a specialized type converter to convert the value of a string which is edited in a grid back to the underlying object type from the cell. The value in the cell is displayed as a string from the ToString() method in the class. Anyway, I am trying to implement my converter, but I am having a little trouble understanding it fully and how exactly to implement some of the methods, especially...

Has anyone ever come accross documentation / examples of implementing names tables? Our software is usually sold to local governments, but now public businesses and lawyers are purchasing it as well ,and we have to change the way things are named within the system. The best way to do this is with a Names Table. It seems pretty straight forward to develope and implement, however I was wondering if anyone knows any links / sources for...

Here's my problem... When I use this code to hit the site in question I'm redirected to another SSL login page. If processed successfully the page creates a cookie and then redirects you to the original request. However, my code cannot seem to hold onto the cookie it creates. Does anyone know how to do this?

hi, My question is: 1. To avoid possible memory leaks, when you use this pattern, after you have dealth with the unmanaged resources and before you take your object off the finalize queue, how are you sure that your managed object resources are completely freed up of resources it's might be using? In my case below I have a private bool variable. Are there any other managed resource that you might need to explicitly free up in

I'm new to VB.NET, and I am translating an object model from C# to VB.NET, and I have come across an odd problem implementing an interface. The interface is a custom interface, IDrillDown, which declares one read-only property with the following VB.NET signature: Public ReadOnly Property ActiveText() As String I have declared the interface in the class declaration, like this:

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
