First work as a programmer

1 New Member
Hi all,

So, I have worked in. iT for years as a Linux Administrator. Recently I got a position as a developer. I have been always good for coding and during all these years I have automated and created several tools in several languages ( java, Golang, web apps ). The problem I am facing now is that I have been included in a development team and I feel that is overwhelmingly more complex that any coding activity I have done in the past.( Mobile apps on Swift )

I have learnt the language very well in the last weeks and and I feel confident with it but it looks like I don't know where to begin with.

We are currently starting a new project and I would like to contribute but although I know I can make things work, I guess that my code won't be "compliant" with what my leaders expect.

To clarify even more, I can create a login screen and make it functional, but will my code be what they are expecting?

I feel totally lost and depressed. This is my first job as a developer and it has been a boomer until now.

If someone can offer any advice for a newbie, that would be immensely appreciated.

this is a somehow normal feeling - i usually encourage new developers in my team to ask proactively for code reviews while i also assign a 'mentor'-type developer to that colleague (and of course give the 'mentor' time to be able to support). Best thing i see when i come into the rooms is when they sit together and do pair programming - then they talk about the code and even the actual problem/case they have to solve and each of them is learning things along this way. programming/developing is not that much about learning to code - which is just similar to learn how to write or read - it is about experience and best practices. People learn from each other - and thats how it works out for us here.

Hi all, I'm working on a project through a consulting company, and I'm writing some database code for use in another programmer's project in Excel/VBA. The other programmer is working through the same consulting company. I did not initially know this other programmer's experience level, but he seemed down to earth and friendly. I saw some signs of trouble after having him try to integrate some of my code, but chalked it up to him...

Hi all: If you think that the following comments are absolute amateurish, then please bear with me, or simply skip this thread. A couple of months back I made the decision to initiate a gradual upgrade of my web programming skills from Classic ASP / VBS to ASP.NET / VB.NET. While the study of the language differences and all the new features in .NET has so far not been a traumatic experience, I am a bit shell-schocked after

Greetings, I'm the webmaster/team lead at avlabsdesign.com, and I'm currently on the hunt for a PHP programmer to join the team. I've been spreading myself quite thin lately, and aside from that I enjoy having a good solid team to work with. If you're at all interested, send an email to team@avlabsdesign.com with reference to your skill level and any projects you may have worked on. I should note that this is not a paid position,...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
