Hello, let me introduce myself for this is my first post, I am a 3rd year Computer Science student this coming June 7, 2010 (South East Asia, Philippines). My goal is to be a Software Engineer. I'm no longer a newbie in programming but still far from expert.
Things that I have learned (School & self study): School -
Fundamentals of Programming 1 (Basic syntax) - using JAVA
Fundamentals of Programming 2 (More on problem solving) - using JAVA
Data Structure
Logic Circuit Self study -
Object Oriented Programming - JAVA (Studied in advance even though this is a 3rd year subject in our prospectus)
So, on with the topic, just wanted to ask if I am in the right track. I'm also curios about what programming language should I choose, maybe because lots of software engineers (or mostly) uses a certain type of programming language, like C++ or some faster languages than JAVA (what I started to learn).
I am also interested to developing games, I just need to know what are the first step to become a game developer and the risk of it, or maybe I should stick to Software Engineering, so, which will you prefer best?
Thank you.

When you say software engineering, in what field? In most cases, if you write good C++, you can do a lot, but you need to be good. C++ while being powerful, relies on the programmer to tie up all loose ends (for things like memory leaks which Java deals will automatically). Java and the other derivatives of C are also good, but are difficult to make very complicated programs, or involved games. I don't know a lot of C++, although I did use MATLAB at uni, which would be what I would learn if anything to write more complex engineering programs (I am an engineer). Having said that, I am teaching myself Java at the moment because the software I have in mind is small, and I want it versitile and independent.
In now time,PHP is the widest use programming language because it is open source and available with a lot of extension.
If your concentration is web-based than PHP or ASP(VBscript) would be good. A lot of tech companies are microsoft camps and ASP(VBscript is good to know) SQL, javascript for AJAX, etc. You sound like you're on the right track if you STARTED with JAVA, I started with BASIC and I graduated 3-4 years ago, Im glad I learned what I did on my own or I woulda been screwed. Keep chugging along.

I'd like to hear thoughts on what books, in your opinion, are true
classics in the field of software engineering. I read a lot on the
topic - at least a book a month for many years. There are many good
authors, however, the only book on making software that is truly
timeless, in my opinion, is "Mythical Man Month" by Brooks. It never
ceases to amaze me that something written over 20 years ago would be
so relevant.
It seems like Brooks...

Hi all,
I have been recently assigned the responsibility to conduct a survey,
the aim of which to find the most popular programming language. I know
that many of you program only in C#, but will be conducting this survey
in other groups. The outcome will determine the plans for the future
for some of the programming languages.
Please reply with the name of your favourite programming language Thank
you very much for taking part in this...

There is an article on oreilly.net's OnLamp site called "The World's
Most Maintainable Programming Language"
It's not about a specific language, but about the qualities that would
make up the title language (learnability, consistency, simplicity,
power, enforcing good programming practices). I thought this might be of
interest to some of you, and I...

Sorry for the off-topic-ish post. My son (a fairly junior sysadmin type)
mentioned to me today that he was looking for online courses for Perl. (I
don't hold that against him. Perl is still a lingua franca in the sysadmin
realm.) In my work I have from time-to-time had to pick up and maintain
scripts (generally shell/Python stuff) which non-professional programmers
have written. It's never what you would call a "pleasant" task.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
