Hey,

I was reading a question on who makes money out of programing and then i relized that this was the right place to ask What Steps i should take to be a programer? i was wondering who to ask but i now relize who is better to ask then programers

Im 13 and very intested in getting into software development as a job. I already know serveral langages main Visual studio 2005 (vb) and soon going into java cause it can run on all os.

I was just wondering what steps i should take to get into software development. I litterly have dreams of running my own bussiness as a software developer including my dreams about my awesome guitar. So i am very dedicated.

Thanks

at 13 you are too young for that

and do not get biased by what u have read or what some one told you.

complete your school first and then try to concentrate on particular language but always try to be multi skilled.

13 may be too young to launch your career, but good for you for having the determination to follow your dreams!

Since you want to run your own business, here are my recommendations :
  • First off, you are too young for anyone to take you seriously. Grit your teeth and accept it because this will not change until you start being older than the people you work with.
    .
  • Be patient; you would be amazed at how quickly life can change (both for the good and for the bad).
    .
  • Ok, now for the fun stuff. You want to run a business, and that's an admirable dream. But to run the industry, you have to know the industry, and that's why it's so great that you're tackling this early.
    .
  • Learn as much as you can, not only about programming, but about the web and software development industries.
    .
  • Take computer programming classes, but focus on really learning the WHY of everything. I got fed up with the computer classes I took in high school until I later learned that they were trying to teach me concepts, not code.
    .
  • Talk to people in the industry, especially people that are doing what you want to do (i.e., software development business owners and managers). Ask them how they got started. Look for patterns. Are there certain things that people do that really work? Are there some things that probably aren't a good idea?
    .
  • There is a HUGE difference between running a small business and working in a gigantic corporate software development company. Try to talk to small business owners and avoid corporate employees. You might want to talk to some corporate workers just to get an idea of what each side has to offer. But if you want to run your own business, you won't learn how to do it from gigantic corporations.
    .
  • It's ok to be afraid or intimidated. That means that you are picking projects that are challenging and that will help you grow the most.
    .
  • But don't ever, ever, *EVER* let your fears or doubts keep you from doing what you want. If it seems too hard, break it down into pieces and tackle it one piece at a time. If it seems like it will take too long, find a way to do it faster or better (a good strategy for success, especially for a small business!).
    .
  • And if it's going too fast, don't be afraid to slow it down. It's your life, after all; enjoy it! Your work/customers/studies will still be there when you get back. Believe me, they will!
    .
  • BE PATIENT! Best case scenario, you will launch your wildly successful business 9 years from now. And even that would be a pretty major accomplishment.
    .
I ain't saying that it ain't gonna happen. But you've got a LONG time to plan for it, so make sure you're having fun along the way!

I know i cannot make money know for 3 reasons

1: Not good as others yet and im to young to be taken seriously as a programer

2: It's illegal for someone my age to have a full job (Australia) and im still in school

3: Most the time you have to be over 18 to get ad's on your website.

Hi

You are too young now. First you should complete your education after that you should go for Techinical Qualification Like B.E. , M.C.A. etc.

Only knowledge of programming is not sufficient for a quality Job.

I told you you'd have to put up with flak because of your age, didn't I? :P

To be a programmer, all you need is a computer. About your age I got interested in making games, so I thought myself how to program (with alot of trial-and-error). Actually programming is a skill, so I am still learning.
I think the idea to pick on certain language is idiotic, to me the programming language doesn't really matter, assembler, c, java, python they all require you to think programming, and thats the hard part. The best advice I can give you to start a programming, is to write a very simple program, and keep on extending. For instance, i recall starting by making a quiz program that quizzed me through homework...
Good luck!
