Why not, to start with NASA uses python.
I have seen many GIS applications developed in java, if java can then why have a doubt with python. To site examples, IBM have a set of products to provide such solutions which are being developed in java and which could be very well manipulated in python which has powerful integrating and extending capablities.
try to have a look at
http://gispython.org/ and http://gislounge.com/python-and-gis-resources/
and also have a look at toolkit
Python-mapnik
C++/Python toolkit for developing GIS applications (Python)
I haven't tried these though ;)

Hi

its depend on your purpose . do you want to use python for geoprocessing in ArcGIS or use python in open sources GIS ?
its better to use ArcGIS if you can. because its most powerful GIS software . u can use Arcpy site package in its environment .also you can use arcobject in Arcgis .

Hi Folks, I'm a brand new Python programmer, so please point me in the right direction if this is not the best forum for this question.... I would like to open an existing MS Excel spreadsheet and extract information from specific worksheets and cells. I'm not really sure how to get started with this process. I ran the COM Makepy utility from my PythonWin (IDE from ActiveSTate),

I have been reading a book about the evolution of the Basic programming language. The author states that Basic - particularly Microsoft's version is full of compromises which crept in along the language's 30+ year evolution. What to you think python largest compromises are? The three that come to my mind are significant whitespace, dynamic typing, and that it is interpreted - not compiled. These three put python under fire and cause...

For last couple of weeks, I was doing lot of research on various simulation libraries. Only one I find in python is http://simpy.sourceforge.net. It is very powerful, but it seems that it does not have any active development. I am sure there are more than that. Where are they? If one wants to create a new simulation program, what are different packages to use: simulation event list - priority queue?

After a brief, but informative, discussion on Freenode's #zope chatroom, I was advised to consult the gurus on c.l.p. I'm working for a small company who is in desperate need to rewrite it's 15+ year old, flat-file, client-tracking database. The staff uses OSX, while I administer the couple linux servers we have to run our website and some internal sites. In our initial brainstorming session, we decided to go with a Python backend...

Hi, I wrote a function to compute openness (a digital elevation model attribute). The function opens the gdal-compatible input raster and reads the values in a square window around each cell. The results are stored in a "1 line buffer". At the end of the line, the buffer is written to the output raster. It runs very slowly and I suspect the raster access to be the main bottleneck. Do you have any idea to speed-up the process ?

I'll be a college freshman this fall, attending Florida Institute of Tech studying electrical engineering. I was considering taking some classes in programming and computer science, and I happened to notice that everything taught is using C++. After further research, it seems to me that C++ seems to be the dominating language in universities. By comparison, our local community college teaches a few classes in VB, Java, Javascript,...

I mean other than sysadmins, programmers, and web-site developers? I have heard of some DBAs who use a lot of python. I suppose some scientists. I think python is used in bioinformatics. I think some math and physics people use python. I suppose some people use python to learn "programming" in general. Python would do well as a teaching language.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
