The predominant operating system in my workplace is Solaris, with a bit
of Linux and MacOS X thrown in. As such people expect to install new
software with the sequence:
../configure
make
make install
I've written some python modules and scripts which I packaged as a
source distribution with distutils and sent it to some of my colleagues

I'm trying to build Python2.4 on a rather old Debian machine. I only
have a shell account there. That's why I'm very limited in my actions.
Building _socket fails (see below) although I tried to use
configure --disable-ipv6
Any clue?

Hello,
I have a strange result on a Gentoo machine in that, after I run
../configure and then type make, the make goes in circles.
checking for c++... c++
configure: WARNING:
By default, distutils will build C++ extension modules with "c++".
If this is not intended, then set CXX on the configure command line.

On a standard Solaris 10 installation with Sun-supplied open-source
packages installed (like SFWrline for readline libs) I cannot seem to
force Python configure/setup.py to build with readline support.
SFWrline installs readline in /opt/sfw/lib & /opt/sfw/include
(This is all attempted with Python-2.4.3 on Solaris 10 06/06 i386)
With this configure:
../configure --prefix=/opt/python-2.4.3 --enable-shared

I'm not sure if this is a problem with python or not.
I'm trying to compile up mod_python to point to /usr/bin/python2.4 (RH
has /usr/bin/python2.3 already installed to I don't want to mess with
/usr/bin/python). When it gets to linking in
/usr/lib/python2.4/config/libpython2.4.a I get the following error:
/usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/python2.4/config/libpython2.4.a(abstract.o):
relocation R_X86_64_32 against `a local symbol' can not be used...

Getting configure errors trying to build PHP 5.2.5 under Solaris 9.
The configure command I use is this:
../configure --with-mysql --with-gd --with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local
--with-png-dir=/usr/local --with-zlib-dir=/usr/local
--with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-libxml-dir=/usr/local
and I get this error:
