is it that my know-how to use Google is insufficient or...
....does really noone use Python for industrial control applications?
At least I didn't manage to find any publicly available modules for such
things as OPC/fieldbus communication etc...

What started as a simple test if it is better to load uncompressed data
directly from the harddisk or
load compressed data and uncompress it (Windows XP SP 2, Pentium4 3.0 GHz
system with 3 GByte RAM)
seems to show that none of the in Python available compression libraries
really works for large sized
(i.e. 500 MByte) strings.

I have Python 2.3 with Tkinter working on a Dell Axim x50 (ARM Windows
Mobile 5.0) and Python 2.3 with PyQt working on a Sharp Zaurus SL-5500
(ARM Linux Embedded). Now I purchased an NEC MobilePro 780 (MIPS
Windows CE 2.11 Handheld PC 3.01). Any suggestions on the most recent
Python and Tkinter implementations I can install on it? I tried an old
Python 1.5 install for MIPS Windows CE and it seems to work okay. But

Is there a Python packaging that is specifically for
embedded systems? ie, very small and configurable so the
user gets to select what modules to install?
For Linux-based embedded systems in particular?
I'm thinking of running it on the Linksys's Linux-based open
source router WRT54G. It has 4MB flash and 16MB RAM. I think
another model has 16MB flash. Any possibilities of running
Python on these systems?

I'm taking a MIPS class, and our first project is to prompt the user to input 8 numbers (using a for loop & an array), and output the minimum and maximum numbers of the array.
I wrote the program in C++ (works perfectly), and I've been trying to translate it, but the online tutorials aren't very good. So here's one thing I find difficult to translate:

I'm compiling the same set of c++ sources to both x86 (32 & 64) and to
mips32. For x86 I'm using gcc 4.1.2 and for mips I'm using gcc 3.4.6.
What I don't understand is why the mips binaries are consistently (and
significantly) larger than the x86 binaries.
Compiling to x86 without any selected optimization level results in a
binary of 961600 bytes while compiling to mips32 with -Os results in a
binary of 1414612 bytes. Both binaries...
