UNIX shell in Python?

Hello.

I was thinking about writing a UNIX shell program using Python. Has
anyone got any experience on this? Is it even possible? I have
programmed a simple shell in C before and I came to think about how
perfect Python would be for parsing user input.

Not only *can* it be done, but it *has* been done and well: See IPython at:

In a python program, I want to do a Unix directory list and then append selected files to each other which, as you know, is just "cat filename2 >> filename1." How do I escape into the shell and then return, bringing with me a directory list? Where can I find some examples of mixing shell commands and Python?

For a while at least I have to work in Windows rather than UNIX, which is more familiar. I'm trying to do with Python some of the things that I've done for years in shell, in particular, sort. The shell sort is pretty easy to use: % sort -t, +2 +5 imputfilename <return> where -t is the field separator, in this case a comma, , and +2 and +4 are the fields to be sorted, in that order. Actually, the fields are zero-based, so the first and...

Hi, I have a question relating to how Unix commands can be issued from Python programs. Im am currently writing a large test script in python and I need this script to call three other separate Python scripts, where each one executes in it own thread of control. I would like to use a Unix command to get each script to run in its own shell. I have tried using the "Commands" module but after I issue the first "command", execution blocks...

I've been programming for a while, but most of my experience is on unix. How do C compilers work on operating systems that weren't written in C? And that have no libc? Compiling C on unix seems so easy. Everything in the code either goes right to machine code, or links to a C library (often libc) or links to the kernel. Are there libc equivalents on non-unix OSes? -- Using M2, Opera's revolutionary e-mail client:...

Hi, I need to encrypt/decrypt some data for my C# application that can also be read on a unix system, and need a quick, simple, cross-platform solution I can embed in my own code that doesn't require dependencies on outside applications. I don't know much about encryption. What I would like to do is come up with an encryption/decryption code that will work with my C#/.NET framework windows code (there are a number of cryptographic...

Hi, It's seems that csh and tcsh acts a bit different when handling special characters in quotes. i.e: if i'll supply my program with the following arguments: -winpath "c:\\temp\\" tcsh will take it as -winpath "c:\temp\" and csh will take it literally (with the double-slashes). Is there a way for me to know what shell is currently running my

http://wiki.python.org/moin/glob now mentions: The glob module lists names in folders that match Unix shell patterns. If the elemental function emulating Unix bash `echo *` really is missing from the 2.5 Python batteries included, then here's a brief clear way of adding that function to Python. Mind you, to date I've never written an elemental function for Python that I haven't eventually found well-buried somewhere, e.g.,

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
