wxTimer problem

I have a python script which creates a wx.App, which creates a wx.Frame
(which has a wx.Timer).

looks sorta like this:

class MyProgram:
def __init__(self):
self.app = MyApp(0)
self.app.MainLo op()

class MyApp(wx.App):
def OnInit(self):
self.myframe= MyFrame()
self.myframe.Sh ow(True)
self.SetTopWind ow(self.myframe )
return True

class MyFrame(wx.Fram e):
def __init__(self):
# do some other stuff here

# setup the timer
self.timer = wx.Timer(self)
self.Bind(wx.EV T_TIMER, self.OnTimer, self.timer)
self.timer.Star t(100)

def killTimer(self) :
self.Unbind(wx. EVT_TIMER)
self.timer.Stop ()
self.timer = None
.....that's the jist of it.

Anyhow, so I startup python and import my script, which loads up the
wx.App, frame and all.

foo = MyProgram()
Then I close the frame. when the frame is closed it calls killTimer.
This method gets called and no exceptions occur.

Then...I create a new instance of the app and try to load the frame
again.

foo = MyProgram()

....and I am getting this error:

"timer can only be started from the main thread"

how can I fix this??

FYI, my script is being started by a new thread each time, so
ultimately we have....

def startProgram():
foo = MyProgram()

threading.Threa d(target=startP rogram).start()
Thanks in advance.

Fix: Start the script from the main thread only.

You must not access wx from more than one thread. Read their wiki about
this and about the appropriate workaround.

I'm having a problem on windows (both 2000 and XP) with a multi-threaded tkinter gui application. The problem appears to be a deadlock condition when a child thread pops up a Pmw dialog window in the context of a main window. The problem does not occur on HPUX or Linux. The following simple example code illustrates the problem and the work around I've come up with; However, I'd like, very much, to get rid of the kludgy work around....

I wrote a GUI program on windows. (python & wxPython) One function is to refresh the data from the COM Object continously. In the beginning, I used the thread.start_new_thread(xxx,()) But no matter how i try, it will cause the win32com error. After that, i use the wx.Timer to do the refresh function. It works fine, but i find one problem. I think timer should be independant, just like thread, but wxTimer doesn't. 1. Does python have...

I have a virtual function in a base class, which is then overwritten by a function of the same name in a publically derived class. When I call the function using a pointer to the derived class (ClassB* b; b->func(); ) the base-class function is called instead of the new function in the derived class. All other similar functions (virtual in the base class and overwritten in the the derived class) work fine, it's just this one function. ...

If I have a class with a virtual method, and a child class that overrides the virtual method, and then I create an instance of the child class AS A base class... BaseClass bc = new ChildClass(); .... and then call the virtual method, why is it that the base class's method is called instead of the overridden method? How do I fix this if I don't know at runtime what the child class is? I'm using Activator.CreateInstance() to load the...

Our web service was working fine until we installed .net Framework 1.1 service pack 1. Uninstalling SP1 is not an option because our largest customer says service packs marked as "critical" by Microsoft must be installed on their servers. Now german Umlaute (ä, ü, ö) and quotes are returned incorrectly in SOAP fault responses. This can be easily verified: Implement the following in a web service method (just raises a SOAPException with a...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
