Is it possible to install a second version of an existing package? My SUSE
Linux box has PIL-1.1.3 installed, and this is used by the OS for various
tasks. It's bundled as part of a "python-imaging" package, which includes
tkinter and other stuff. Removing it causes widespread damage!
I want to install PIL-1.1.4, since I need the EXIF stuff....

Does anyone know the workaround for this error, encountered when trying
to build PIL 1.1.4 from source under cygwin (Python 2.3.3)?
running build_ext
building '_imaging' extension
gcc -fno-strict-aliasing -DNDEBUG -g -O3 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes
-IlibImaging
-I/usr/include/python2.3 -c encode.c -o

I did this once and can't remember how <blush> so I read the
reportlab user guid. It says to unzip the reportlab archive - this
is on w2k, BTW, with Python23 - to a directory and make a file
called reportlab.pth in the pythod dir. The only line in this file
is supposed to be the path to the reportlib dir.
Then I'm instructed to open the ......

I'll post this to the image-sig as well, but the audience is a bit
wider here.
I've just upgraded to Python 2.4. I've installed the free microsoft
optimising compiler and hacked distutils to use it - following the
instructiosn from http://www.vrplumber.com/programming/mstoolkit/ . It
works great and I've built a windows installer for...

Many people I know ask why Python does slicing the way it does.....
Can anyone /please/ give me a good defense/justification???
I'm referring to why mystring gives me
elements 0, 1, 2 and 3 but *NOT* mystring (5th element).
Many people don't like idea that 5th element is not invited.
(BTW, yes I'm aware of the explanation where slicing

A few weeks ago I asked for advice about which GUI toolkit I should
learn, and receved several helpful answers. In the end I went with
Tkinter. This was because a) it was already installed on the machines
I am most likley to use, b) it is cross platform, and c) it was not as
complex as PyGtk - which I tried and was totally unable to...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it. ...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in...
