Dr. Dobb's Python-URL! - weekly Python news and links (May 24)

QOTW: "If you're sick of answering newbie questions, and don't think you

Jake tells us about the \r control character, which allows one to
refresh a terminal line. Many people help him to use it from Python,
and Fredrik warns him that it might well not work from an IDE:

John Reese asks whether he needs to explicitly close file objects,
or whether reference counting will take care of it for him. Martin
v. Löwis shows a scenario that demonstrates that ref counting won't
always close files when you think it will:

Dustin is refactoring some unpythonic code that uses a very nasty
import mechanism, but now he's having trouble with circular imports:

Taken out of context, Joal's comments might seem a bit rude and abrasive
- I don't think they were meant that way. People really should look at
the context of the quote - it'a actually a very constructive suggestion.

I find that if you make the same assumption about c.l.py in general,
you are seldom wrong. That's a big part of the reason that I like it
here.

I am new to this group, and relatively new to python programming, however, have encountered a problem I just cannot solve through reading the documentation, and searching this group on google. I have written a theme in python for the superkaramba theme engine on kde (see http://netdragon.sourceforge.net - if you are a kde/linux user, it is a great visual applet engine). I have uploaded it to www.kdelook.org for others to download and...

hello again. i'm now into using python instead of another language(s) for describing structures of data, including names, structure, type-checks, conversions, value-validations, metadata etc. And i have things to offer, and to request. And a lot of ideas, but who needs them.... here's an example (from type_struct.py):

I'd like to be able to install python with stow, and then to install various modules which use distutils, also with stow. This currently pretty much won't work, because Python chases symlinks to set sys.prefix, which means that the site path gets set to the `true' location rather than the one with all the links. This means that Python won't find modules you install with stow, unless you glue the linky site directory into sys.path. Doing...

I'm an indie shareware Windows game developer. In indie shareware game development, download size is terribly important; conventional wisdom holds that--even today--your download should be 5MB or less. I'd like to use Python in my games. However, python24.dll is 1.86MB, and zips down to 877k. I can't afford to devote 1/6 of my download to just the scripting interpreter; I've got music, and textures, and my own crappy code to ship. ...

Hi, I am a bit disapointed with the current Python online documentation. I have read many messages of people complaining about the documentation, it's lack of examples and the use of complicated sentences that you need to read 10 times before understanding what it means. That's why I have started a collaborative project to make a user contributed Python documentation. The wiki is online here: http://www.pythondocs.info

I am trying to write a VB6 (not VB.Net) application that has a console window that allows Python command to be typed at the prompt. The idea is so that, I can have full Python scripting from within my application. I should be able to type commands from a Python script (include import etc, so I can use other Python libraries). In other words, I want to provide a complete (or almost complete) interactive Python Scripting environment from...

I am working on embedding Python 2.5 in my C++ application, and I have a few questions: 1) My application is multi-threaded; what problems should I be aware of if I create a separate interpreter in each working thread? The documentation is a bit vague (or perhaps I haven't found the right place). Calls into my application are already thread-safe. 2) Rather than implementing my own editor in C++, I would like to be able to use existing...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers.
