Suppose I want to sell a (small, 1000 lines) Python program. It is a
commandline program for database applications and I have a customer.
The customer wants to "try it out" before buying. The try-out version
should be a full, complete, version.
As much as I like the opensource movement, I have a problem now. If I
just give them the Python source code then they can show it to their
programmers and they have no reason anymore to pay...

This is really a comment on "Python in Systems Administration: Part I
-- Better Scripting"
http://www.samag.com/documents/s=8964/sam0312a/0312a.htm
by Cameron Laird.
Reading the article, although I am a fan of Python, I kinda take issue
with the example given. It doesn't seem to fit with the concept of
'many smaller utilities doing one thing well, connected via pipes'
If I had the task of writing a Unix utility to match the GUI Python

I am starting to learn Python but I want to know how the job market looks
for programming using Python. I really don't see many jobs (probably one or
two) that require Python experience at all. Most DBA and SA positions that I
have seen require Perl and most development position require Java or C++ so
how can learning Python benefit my career if there are little to no chance
that an employer will require the use of Python or consider using...

Hello
My question has to do with python and linux - I was interested in
finding out what it would take to reimplement the Linux Kernel in python
basically just taking the source code from linux and rewriting it in
python Would this idea make sense to do - if so what would be the
benefits of doing this and in what way would this not be a good idea
Cheers

I did it.
I proposed python as the main language for our next CAD/CAM
software because I think that it has all the potential needed
for it. I'm not sure yet if the decision will get through, but
something I'll need in this case is some experience-based set
of rules about how to use python in this context.
For example... is defining readonly attributes in classes
worth the hassle ? Does duck-typing scale well in complex

The following url points to an article written by Damian Conway
entitled "Ten Essential Development Practices":
http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2005/07/14/bestpractices.html
Althought the article has Perl as a focus, I thought that some of the
general points made might be of interest to the Python community. It
would certainly be interesting to put together an analogous version of
this article that centers on Python.
Best Regards,

Hello All,
I have a hard question, every time I look for this answer its get out
from the technical domain and goes on in the moral/social domain.
First, I live in third world with bad gov., bad education, bad police
and a lot of taxes and bills to pay, and yes I live in a democratic
"state" (corrupt, but democratic).
So please, don't try to convince me about the social / economical /
open source / give to all / be open / all people are...

We've got a client who has been planning to use SharePoint for
managing their organization documents, but has recently dropped that
idea and is looking for an alternative. Is there any Python package
with similar functionality?
I confess that I've never used SharePoint myself, and what I know
about is mainly from these sources:

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
