Depends. Are you new to programming or just new to the Python
language?

If the latter you should just use the official tutor that comes
with Python and save your money for one of the more advanced
books and/or references.

If you are a complete beginner there are lots of online tutors
but only a couple of books.

1) Ivan Van Lanningham's "Teach Yourself Python in 24 Hours"
2) The Deitel's "Python How to Program"
2) My "Learn to Program using Python"

The focus of each is slightly different.

Check out the newbies page on the Python web site for more info.
I'd recommend trying a web tutor first then buying something like
Learning Python or Core Python...

And "Text processing in python", which would be good for experienced
programmers new to python, is available online at
<http://gnosis.cx/TPiP/>, although no doubt the author would be keen
for people to buy copies as well...

Plenty of useful and free introductory material here:-

And not a flattened dead tree in sight.

hi, I am new to python (but not to programming - have programmed in many other languages like C++/lisp/perl etc.) and I would like to buy a good book. The local bookstore has no books about Python, so I cannot look into a book and see whether I like it. That is why I turned to this newsgroup for advise. I would like a book with a very complete and correct description of the language and the built-in features, and things like how to...

Hi, folks, At the beginning of 2003, I was a frustrated computer user, and lapsed programmer, with problems to solve that screamed for programming. Thanks to the Python language and community, I am a programmer once again. Hello list, I wonder if I could get some feedback from the list on a Python book I'm about to order from the net. The book is called "Python How to Program" by Deithel & Deithel. Issued on Prentice Hall 2002. I'm not an experienced Python programmer and I'm looking for a comprehensive but also an "understandable" book. I'm also open for suggestions. Best regards

The examples are just introduction to particular definition of the concepts. I would appreciate if any one provide me the resources to find such exercise(irrespective of Programming language) , working on which...

Hi, Is there anybody here interested in artificial intelligence (AI)? Yes, perhaps this thread would be more suitable for an AI usenet group and I have also posted my question there, but I want to know Python community's opinion. Could you recommend me please a good AI book to start with? I don't want to see Lisp code, if possible ;-D Thanx in advance

I've tried using several online tutorials, and most of them are great, but I'd like to have a good Python book on hand. Any suggestions? One of my weak spots mentally, is that it has been hard to jump into programming quickly. I've studied HTML/XHTML and CSS, and I picked up on it pretty fast. My next goal is to learn a programming language, which will hopefully lead me to even more languages. I'm starting with Python, and actually already...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
