Hi guys. I'm back on the threading gig again.
It's the age-old question about waiting for something to happen without
wasting time doing it.
Take two threads: the main thread and a worker thread. The worker thread is
reading the serial port, waiting for something to happen (a service
request). When it does it raises an event. Of course, the event is executed
on the worker thread. The idea is that when the event is raised, the handler...

I have a small windows service which connects to a POP3 server at
defined intervals, scans the available messages, extracts the required
information and inserts the data into a SQL database. I am assuming
that this is not an uncommon piece of software.
I want to get an architecture that conforms as closely as possible with
the recommendations from Microsoft on developing Windows Services, but
to be honest I have found difficultly in...

Today my stateserver (running at the same computer at the web-server) suddenly
stopped responding (after 10 days working perfectly).
I did not see any entry in the eventlog indicating that the service stopped
responding.
This is the entry in web.config
---
<sessionState mode="StateServer"
stateConnectionString="tcpip=localhost:42424"
cookieless="false"
timeout="20"/>

I have noticed how the thread I created just stops running. I have added
several exceptions to the thread
System.Threading.SynchronizationLockException
System.Threading.ThreadAbortException
System.Threading.ThreadInterruptedException
System.Threading.ThreadStateException
to see if I could get more information about why the thread stops running
but that code is never executed. Any ideas on how I can debug this?

I am facing a unique problem where i am reading
an XMl stream(8000 records) using open XML into SQL server > The problem is
that whenever i execute the stored procedure it starts inserting data but
suddenly stops at about 1 min 45-50 secs time. The import stops and the
error is
"Thread was being aborted". The whole stuff works fine when i connect to the
database server from local machine.

My first thought was to call
WorkerThread.Suspend
but the help cautions against this (for good reason) because the caller has
no control over where the thread actually stops, and it might have a lock
pending, for example.
I want to be able to stop a thread temporarily, and then optionally resume
it or stop it for good.

Hi,
I developed an Outlook Add In (VB.NET 2005, for Outlook 2003) that sometimes
suddenly stops loading. I've put everywhere in the code Exception Handlers,
but no Exception is catched.
it seems that other add ins aren't loaded afterwarths (nod32).
Does anybody know a way to find out why an outlook add could do this? and
find out after the problem what caused the problem?

Hi,
I wrote a windows service in c# in .NET 1.1 and SQL Stored Procedures, and I
run it on Microsoft windows server 2003 service pack 1.
The service works every 10 minutes and pass data between SQL tables.
The service works well for about 2 hours.
After about 2 hours the service stops.
When I look at the event viewer I see the message:
Faulting application <my service name>.exe, version 1.0.2413.28158, faulting
module kernel32.dll,...

Is there any way to force a thread to abort and really have it abort? I have
a thread that every once in a while gets hung to so I kill it. Problem is I
have a thread that every once in a while gets stuck (I'm working on why that
happens) and I want to kill it. I do a thread.abort and the status becomes
abortrequested but never actually goes through.
If it were an actual process I could kill it but there seems to be no real
kill for...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
