I've been following the group a bit (somewhat loosely; discussions involving
other languages or advanced concepts kind of lose me), and I see all this
negativity (OMG Python's lambda is borken roflol, use teh othar langauge). I as
a relative newcomer to Python pay little heed to the criticism, though. A few
things in Python are counterintuitive, yes, but what language doesn't have such
things? And I feel that one can master the syntax of...

I read this mailing list fairly often, and I am always amazed at what
I learn (even not related to Python). I am relatively new to Python.
I make my living developing mostly in Java. Python was a "discovery"
I made a couple of years ago, and I love the language, but only get to
use it at home for hobbies.
With all the recent news:
- ESR tells Sun to open Java, or be relegated into obscurity by
Python, Ruby, and Perl.
- Project mono...

Raise your hand if you think the best technology wins!
For those of you with your hands in the air, tell me: if Python is so good, why has PHP achieved such greater adoption and mindshare? Why do web scripters still cling to their Perl, even in corporate environments? Why hasn't Python made inroads against Java? Why is Ruby, and Ruby on Rails, getting such strong play?
Are these better programming languages, or is it other factors?

Hi. I am interested in learning a new programming language, and have been
debating whether to learn Ruby or Python. How do these compare and contrast
with one another, and what advantages does one language provide over the
other? I would like to consider as many opinions as I can on this matter
before I start studying either language in depth. Any help/comments are
greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm interested in knowing which Python web framework is most like Ruby
on Rails.
I've heard of Subway and Django.
Are there other Rails clones in Python land I don't know about?
Which one has largest community/buzz about it?

Hi, I've been thinking about Python vs. Lisp. I've been learning
Python the past few months and like it very much. A few years ago I
had an AI class where we had to use Lisp, and I absolutely hated it,
having learned C++ a few years prior. They didn't teach Lisp at all
and instead expected us to learn on our own. I wasn't aware I had to
uproot my thought process to "get" it and wound up feeling like a
moron.
In learning Python I've...

I've been thinking (and blogging) about python evangelism since PyCon,
as a result of which I created a squidoo lens:
http://www.squidoo.com/pythonlogy
Imagine my surprise at discovering that this has gone up in rank (by
number of views) from # 442,000 or so to #153! Clearly there's some
mileage in marketing Python, and I'd like to keep the buzz going if it
means more people will adopt the language.

The definition of a component model I use below is a class which allows
properties, methods, and events in a structured way which can be
recognized, usually through some form of introspection outside of that
class. This structured way allows visual tools to host components, and
allows programmers to build applications and libraries visually in a RAD
environment.
The Java language has JavaBeans as its component model which allows Java...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
