I read recently that: "if a before-image was made before an
interruption in database processing, you use the before-image dump &
simply begin processing again from just before the last transaction.
Any checkpoints are irrelevant."
I'm not a dba here, so bear with me... What I don't understand is, why
are checkpoints irrelevant when you did a before image dump? Why not
begin from the last checkpoint? Probably part of my problem is...

I just fixed a bug that some of the correctness pedants around here may
find useful as ammunition.
The problem was that some code would, very occasionally, die with a
segmentation violation error. (Not as infrequent as some bugs that
have been discussed here in the past, but maybe once in an overnight
run of the program when it was configured to aggressively exercise the
section that the bug was in.) It was easy enough to trap the...

Greetings,
I have a 23GB data table upon which I am building a primary key of three
columns. The data is mounted in a 137GB device and pg_xlog is mounted
on a separate 3.5GB device. I have configured 24 checkpoint segments,
which I expect gives me a worst-case usage in pg_xlog of 384MB.
Unfortunately, during the CREATE INDEX, pg_xlog becomes full!

I'm using PostgreSQL 7.3.4 on RH9. Data and logs are on separate
disks. (These are low-end IDE disks. That part of the problem
is out of my control.)
When a checkpoint occurs, all operations slow way, way down.
iostat of the data disk shows that, during a checkpoint, reads/sec
drops from 25-30 to under 0.5. Writes/sec go up, from 40-45
before the checkpoint, to 80-85 during. My test program does
a mixture of 1/2 reads and 1/2 inserts,...

Hello all,
I have a programming problem/challenge.
Let explain my scenario:
I have a C program (distributed accross many files and functions) that
is responsible for handling hardware. This piece of hardware (a
microcontroller) can do several lengthy procedures depending on the
commands it receives.
The problem arises when the hardware receives a "stop command". The

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...
