Multiple Rules - an example

The interaction of rules with views can be complicated, so here's a
short sample file which illustrates the main points.

DROP TABLE foo CASCADE;
CREATE TABLE foo (a int4 PRIMARY KEY, b text, c text);

COPY foo FROM stdin;
1 aaa AAA
2 bbb AAA
3 ccc AAA
4 aaa BBB
5 bbb BBB
6 ccc BBB
\.

-- View selecting rows with odd value of "a"
CREATE VIEW foo_v AS SELECT * FROM foo WHERE (a % 2 = 1);

-- Alternate view selecting rows with b="bbb"
-- CREATE VIEW foo_v AS SELECT * FROM foo WHERE b='bbb';

CREATE RULE foo_v_upd0 AS ON UPDATE TO foo_v DO INSTEAD
UPDATE foo SET b = 'z' || NEW.b WHERE a = OLD.a;

CREATE RULE foo_v_upd1 AS ON UPDATE TO foo_v DO INSTEAD
UPDATE foo SET c = OLD.b WHERE a = OLD.a;

SELECT * FROM foo ORDER BY a;

UPDATE foo_v SET b='xxx';

SELECT * FROM foo ORDER BY a;

/*
1. Save this file as rule_test.sql and run from psql with \i rule_test.sql
2. Rename rule "foo_v_upd0 " as "foo_v_upd2 " and see what happens to the
order
of rule execution
3. Comment out the first view definition and uncomment the alternate
4. Rename "foo_v_upd2 " back to "foo_v_upd0 "
Note what happens when the first rule eliminates rows from the view

Cracow, 20.09.2004 Hello, I need to implement a library containing a hierarchy of classes together with some binary operations on objects. To fix attention, let me assume that it is a hierarchy of algebraic matrices with the addition operation. Thus, I want to have a virtual base class class Matr;

I have situation where I need to copy multiple records (only certain fields) from a Rules table to an Events table based on a selection identified in a combo box. When the selection is made in a parent table, multiple records in a child table are affected. However, I'm a bit weak on programming experience. INSERT INTO is not suitable. Any ideas? When the combo box update property is triggered, the code needs to accomplish: IF...

I've run across this issue several times of late, and I've never come up with a satisfactory answer to the best way to handle this schema issue. You have a large section of schema in which a subset of records across all tables is often considered a separate logical system, but sometimes may be treaded ar part of the global system, and there is not simply a 1-m-m... tree among the records in a logical database. Here's an example. A...

I'm trying to use the ASP.NET validators to check some client-side business rules. I've got two ASP TextBox controls (call them tbxYear1 and tbxYear2) used to enter a range of years. I've got a couple things I need to check: 1) tbxYear1 and tbxYear2 are both optional, but if values are entered they have to integers and non-negative 2) if values are entered for both tbxYear1 and tbxYear2 then tbxYear1 must be less than tbxYear2 It...

While developing an internal IE6-only webapp, a discussion started about the 'best' way to apply classes to data tables across multiple pages. The two arguments were: 1. Apply a single class to each table. That class (possibly in combination with other classes on child elements) controls every part of the table - layout, colors, fonts, etc. Example: class="data" PROS: Easier to standardize, less specificity confusion, everything is...

We have an ASP.NET 2.0 (C#) application that is divided into multiple layers. The multiple layers come from having a web project and 2 different class library projects in the same solution. I'm having difficulties figuring out the best way to handle (catch) exceptions in the different layers and then propagating those errors back up through the call stack to ultimately display something to the end-user. Note this is an intranet...

Hello: I need to write a program that search through multiple level BOM, get all the items. It seems like a easy enough project, but when I put my hands on it and couple of hundred lines of codes later. It starts look more difficult. I was hopeing someone might have a very easy way to do it that I don't know about... The BOM structure looks like this.. Father Child A 1 A 2

My app contains data on projects. I've recently added functionality to allow for markups on a base cost. The code currently applies any markup to the base cost only. However, in reality, some markups are on top of the base cost + other markups. I have about 10 markups that can be applied and users may want to change the order in which the markups are applied. Plus there may be multiple markups that go just against the base. Here's...

Hello, I've been reading Effective C++ about multiple inheritance, but I still have a few questions. Can someone give me some help please? First, it is said that if virtual inheritance is used, then "the responsibility for initializing a virtual base is borne by the most derived class in the hierarchy". What does it mean? Initializing base class is usually done automatically by the compiler, but a derived class can invoke the base...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
