Beside its an opensource and supported by community, what's the fundamental
differences between PostgreSQL and those high-price commercial database (and
some are bloated such as Oracle) from software giant such as Microsoft SQL
Server, Oracle, and Sybase?
Is PostgreSQL reliable enough to be used for high-end commercial

Let's asume I got convinced by your advocacy and decided to install and
play a bit with PostgreSQL to discover it's features and how I can use them.
Installation went fine. I decided to read the long version.. at some point
I was told to create a user postgres.
I didn't find recommended settings for this user like if it needs a shell
and where the users homedir is supposed to...

For ease of configuration and other reasons, I would like for my
single-user GUI app to be able to use postgresql in-process as a library
accessing a database created in the users home directory. I think I
could possibly get what I want by launching a captive copy of postmaster
with appropriate args but it seems conceptually cleaner to not have a
seperate process at all. Has anyone tried to do anything like this?

I just took over a project done by somebody else of some C extension of
Postgresql 7.1.3. And now I have to port it to pl/pgsql. The guy who
developed it said he didn't get it running under 7.2 for some reason. And I
suspect it might not run properly under 7.4.1. Since I only have one machine
so I really hope that I could run 7.1.3 and 7.4.1 on the same machine and
run his code on 7.1.3 while developing pl/pgsql on 7.4.1. Now can...

I am trying install the postgresql-7.4.3 simple installation. I did ./configure command at the postgresql directory source. While the configuring proccess I receiving the follow message:
checking for tar... /bin/tar
checking for strip... strip
checking whether it is possible to strip libraries... yes

I am trying to install PostgreSQL 8.2 on Windows XP. I get the message " The Port already in use" during installation and installation stops. When I stop the process related to Quick Heal (Anti-Virus Software) through Task Manager, the installation messaghe changed to "The data base directory is not empty".
