limiting execution time of queries

Dear list,

i want to limit the execution time of an SQL-query. That means, that the
query should be stoped if it takes longer that e.g. 10 seconds. How can
I do so?

Sure, use SET statement_timeo ut or in postgresql.conf .

Hello to all, I've written a script that take quite a long time to execute (email sending). Last time I ran it, PHP gave me a "execution time limit exceeded" (or something like that), so I changed the value in php.ini. Now, the questions are : - How can I make sure I'm not going to have problems when execution time lengthens still ? I'm afraid to set too high a time limit in case other scripts run astray. - Can I "break" the job into...

Is it possible to limit the query time in MySQL (3.x or 4.0)? For example, I'd like to have any query that takes more than a specified number of seconds just quit automatically. Seems dumb, but on a web site, nobody is going to wait minutes for a query to return so they refresh anyway. So on a busy server, MySQL ends up with several queries running that all take a long time to finish which compound to make it even slower. A simple time...

Hi All, I'm a relative newbie to SQL Server, so please forgive me if this is a daft question... When I set "Show Execution Plan" on in Query Analyzer, and execute a (fairly complex) sproc, I note that a particular query is reported as having a query cost of "71% relative to the batch" - however, this is nowhere near the slowest executing query in the batch - other queries which take over twice as long are reported as having costs in...

I have a Stored Procedure (SP) that creates the data required for a report that I show on a web page. The SP does all the work and just returns back a results set that I dump in an ASP.NET DataGrid. The SP takes a product area and a start and end date as parameters. Here are the basics of the SP. 1. Create temp table to store report results, all columns are created that will be needed at this point. 2. Select products and general...

Hi, I am running OSDL-DBT3 test against PostgreSQL. I found performance difference between the runs even though the data and queries are the same. I tried to study this problem by getting execution plans at the beginning of each test. The following script gets execution plan for 22 queries, except query 15. i=1 while

Hi there, lately, I experienced a strange thing on my DB2 V8.1 on Windows: Some queries took a very long time. A snapshot discovered the following: Number of executions = 47 Number of compilations = 1 Worst preparation time (ms) = 2 Best preparation time (ms) = 2 Internal rows deleted = 0

Good Day, I have a MS Access (Access 2000 now upgraded to 2003) database that tracks customer information. One function of this database is to create an encrypted license file for our software, which is then emailed out to the customer. The encryption string is based on information in the database and can only be generated by executing a DOS command. This is done from within the database by clicking a button on a form that triggers a...

I've got a XML file I read using a file_get_contents and turn into a simpleXML node every time index.php loads. I suspect this is causing a noticeable lag in my page-execution time. (Or the wireless where I'm working could just be ungodly slow-- which it is.) Is reading a file much more resource/processor intensive than, say, including a .php file? What about the act of creating a simpleXML object? What about the act of checking the...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
