Hello,
I have a table which has a foreign key relationship with itself. I
want and expect my updates to cascade (deletes definitely cascade as
expected) but instead I just get error 1217: foriegn key error.
I have written example code to use in reproducing the problem:

I have run into a strange problem with a site I am working on. My SELECT
queries work fine, but I just tried to add an UPDATE statement and it fails.
A test showed that INSERT fails also. I created a new table just for testing
called "blah" and it had the same results.
My statements:
"UPDATE GiftCerts SET Paid=1 WHERE CertSerial='2005-0001'"
and
"INSERT INTO blah (test) VALUES ('something')"

Hi,
Let me explain how I'd generally do things. For a page where the user
edits data, I'd generally call it something like editfred.php (for
example), the page which updates the data would be called
updatefred.php and equally the page which processes a delete would be
deletefred.php. I like splitting the pages up this way, it feels less
cluttered and more organised than throwing all the functionality in one
fred.php.

i need to update a column which is a member of the PK on this
table. there are some thousands of rows to be updated, many more
thousand already in the table.
so, i get a constraint violation doing a simple
set col1 = 'x' where col1 = 'y'
attempted (in general terms; col1 & col2 are the PK)

Hi,
I'm writing a VB.NET application who has to insert/update and delete a whole
bunch of records from a File into a Sql Server Database. But I want to be
able to knwo the 'result' of my ctions.
for exemple:
- after an INSERT: knowing if this happened well or not
- after an UPDATE: knowing wich number of records were updated (or if there
were records udpated or not)

I seemed to remember being able to do this but I can't find the docs.
Can I run a sql query to insert new or update existing rows in one query?
Otherwise I have to run a select query to see if it's there and then
another one to update/insert.
What I'm trying to do is create a counter for each key, insert a value
of 1 or increment the value by 1 and then set another specific row
(where key = $key) to always increment by 1.

I'm running an update query in SQL 7 from QA, and it runs forever. Has been
running for 20 minutes so far! The query is quite simple: update a single
field in a table, based on a join with another table. There are a total of
1200 rows that are affected (out of a total of 60,000 in the table). Should
not take 20 minutes! Also, retrieving the 1200 rows using the same criteria
is instantaneous.
