PG 8.0beta: psql suggestion

Been playing with the 8.0 beta of Postgres. It seems really nice. One
new thing I noticed is 'psql' displays RULE definitions in the \d
<viewname> output. This is nice compared to 7.3.x's inability to see
RULE definitions at all.

However, this makes the output of \d completely useless. Maybe my rule
definitions are atypically complex, but having 300+ lines of RULE
definitions in my face gets in the way. The output for one particular
view fills my scrollback buffer such that I can't get to the actual
view definition! :(

What about moving the RULE definition output to \d+? According to the
online help, the '+' is supposed to mean "more detail".

Alternatively, maybe a new command, \dr <viewname> to list out only the
rules for the specified view (or table)?

Anyways, thanks for the hard work on 8.0. Can't wait for it to get out
of beta!

I am developing a client application for postgreSQL in Tcl/Tk (see http://gborg.postgresql.org/project/pfm ). It mainly uses PgTcl or pgintcl. I don't have any problems with those, but I am also trying to call psql from my application for SQL statements typed directly by the user. I have used the Tcl command set psqlChannel

Hello all, I just wanted to pass on some information about compatibility between the psql client and the postgres server. On a particular network, my workstation and the server are both debian boxes, but the workstation is on a more frequent upgrade schedule. The server is still running postgres 7.3.4, but my workstation has been upgraded with the latest (7.4.1) postgres client tools.

Hello, Today I tried connecting to my database locally via psql. I got the usual welcome & basic help messages, but it never got to the prompt: it just hung. So I checked top and the psql process was increasing in size at quite a rate (up to a gig in under 30 seconds). I'd been using psql with no problems only a couple of hours ago, and I haven't installed anything for at least a couple of days that I can think of.

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi there, I haven't found a way to set the client encoding of a psql connection other then "\encoding" which is arkward for batch processing. As .psqlrc is being ignored during batch processing and the internal encoding is being set *after* "-v", I have to resort to arkward solutions in order to read data via scripts. (To whom it may concern: instead of using "-c" you can pipe your

Hello - I'm running PG 8.1 on Windows XP. I've installed the server to run as a service. The psql command fails to connect to the server, although I can connect with other clients. Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
