I think this is a suggestion/comment!
pg_dump man page:
--schema-only
Dump only the schema (data definitions), no data
I think this use of the word schema is confusing, meaning data
definitions, whereas elsewhere in the man page schema are used as a
namespace definition.
--schema=schema
Dump the contents of schema only. If this option is not
speci- fied, all non-system schemas in the target
database will be dumped
It would be nice if this could be a comman separated list (like set
search_path; A,info,public etc).

A common interchangeable title for schema is namespace and in actuality
we use \dn in psql (\dnamespace)
to list them.
Perhaps we should change the name? I believe Oracle uses the term
namespace as well.

I think we're stuck. We can't avoid the fact that the SQL syntax uses
the keyword SCHEMA to mean a namespace. We also can't avoid the very
common usage of "database schema" to mean the logical structure of your
table collection. Trying to redefine or avoid either of these terms is
hopeless. Maybe we could add some text in the tutorial to point out
the double meaning?

Hi,
postgresql 7.4beta4 on linux
and postgresql 7.3.4 on linux
We have a database that we routinely backup using "pg_dump -a"
We have to do this (dump the data only) because of various characteristics of
the database (e.g. the dump file tries to create fks to tables that it hasn't
created yet if we export schema + data).

Pg: 7.4.
I thought there was supposed to be switch to allow dumping of schema X from
a database in version 7.4? But I don't see one.
Is it still not possible?
TIA

I have a database in pgsql (7.3.2) on redhat 9.
When I try a 'pg_dump mydb' to back up the database, I get:
pg_dump: could not find namespace with OID 2200
Verbose version is:
-bash-2.05b$ pg_dump -v mydb | more
pg_dump: saving database definition
pg_dump: reading namespaces
pg_dump: reading user-defined types

Hello!
I have a small database (10MB gz dump). When I do a pg_dump -l -s (to
list the schema) of the original database it takes below 1 second. But
when I do dump of a copy of the database (using a full restore into a
new DB) it takes like 10-15 seconds to do the schema list (pg_dump -l
-s). I need to compare the schemes of about 20 tables and this takes a
while... Anyone have any ideas ? I can't figure out why the newly
created copy...

Hello,
I have an SQL database which I create with:
psql -f create.sql foodb
I then access this database and perform several insertions, modifications,
and deletions. Finally, I want to backup my database. I do not want to
backup the schema. All I want is a set of insert statements stored in
a file insert.sql which I can run on a set of empty database tables

Since pg_dump will be allowing multiple -t <table> parameters for 8.0, here
is a related feature request.
A similar option (allowing multiples also) to EXCLUDE tables, so we can do a
dump of the entire database minus a few tables.

Hi,
I've seen in previous posts that recommended practice for database backup is
to run the dump utility twice. Once for schema only and a second time for
data only (I think). Up to know, I've only ever dumped both, and have never
had a problem restoring into older/newer versions of postgres, nor with
restoring into other commercial versions of postgres. This is a testament
of the robustness of pg_dump! Of course, there are always a...

I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
