Linux Labs

Heya,

Does anyone have any experience of Linux Labs "Clusgres" (A Linux
cluster hosting a PostgreSQL database server)? It seems to be a shared
memory architecture for a clutser of linux boxes which as far as
understand should be ok for PG. We are currently considering hardware
upgrades and are either considering a cluster of some form or a meatier
box to replace our current main DB. The meaty box would more than likely
be a Quad Opteron with something like 32Gb or RAM. For the same price we
can also get a 5 node dual Xeon cluster based around Clusgres. Just
wondered if anyone had any experience? We are specifically interested if
any of you guys (or gals) have any experience of this using a SAN.

FYI, we are currently running on a dual PIII 1.4GHz, 2Gb RAM, 4x10k 73Gb
RAID 5 on a 1Gb FC SAN using RH 7.3/9 and PG 7.3. This currently is
hosting a 2Gb database which looks as if it might grow a lot in the next
year or two. Biggest table is a PostGIS table with about 72 million
rows, which will probably at least double. This setup performs
adequately at the moment, but it looks as if a significant amount of
meney is around the corner, which is always nice ;-).

We are of course open to other suggestions if anyone has any. Budget
might be in the region of £15k ($30k) and I might be able to wangle up
to max of £30k ($60k) if we are lucky. I myself am quite interested in
going along some form of 64bit route just to open up the memory space,
and Opteron seems almost ideal performance/price wise. Any information
anyone has about hardware setups would be great.

a colleague of mine has seen an odd problem in some code of ours. we initially noticed it on webware, but in distilling a test case it seems to be strictly a python issue. in the real system, it manifests as webware just locking up, for no apparent reason, until we kill it. we've also had the python interpreter running webware die on occasion. it works fine on our desktop linux and windows machines, but fails on the production hardware. ...

Hi I would like to know if there are existing XML standards for data exchange between laboratories and trading companies. For example when a a trader buy COAL, there are some analysis done to measure different physical values, such as size, calorific values, etc. Buyer and seller rely on labs to sample the products. Do you know if there are existing XML standards which are applicable to this type of process. The reason for this is to...

I'm kind of new to Linux and I've started downloading applications and installing them. Applications are distributed as source code in a ".tar.gz" file. You unzip the file, navigate to the directory, run "configure", then run "make", then run "make install". Anyway, in all the programs I've seen, there's only ever been .c files, and it looks like only gcc has been invoked. Do people in the Linux community not use C++ and distribute their...

C/C++ Programs and Debugging in Linux This tutorial will give you a basic idea how to debug a program in Linux using GDB. As you are aware Visual Studio doesn’t run on Linux so you have to use some of the tools provided on the command-line. If you hate the command line tools, get over it since you’re bound to be using them at some point in your career. All commands in Linux ARE case sensitive so capital letters are different from lowercase...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
