Postgresql & 64 Bit Opteron

Hi,

We're thinking of moving to a 64 bit platform for our database. Does
anyone have any stories of migration from 32 bit to 64 bits?
* How did it impact performance?
* Were there any gochas?
* What processors were used (any AMD Opteron's so far?)

Also what kind of performance increase could we expect if we moved from
a dual 32 bit to a quad 32 bit platform. (We are already using speedy
10,000 RPM SCSI disks in RAID configuration, with gobs of RAM.)

Hello,

It depends entirely on many different issues. There are a couple of
real benefits you will get from the Opteron but only
if you actually need them.

1. Throughput. The Opteron FSB is the same speed as the chip itself.
2. Addressable memory (1 TB I believe).

However, generally the number one culprit in performance for a
database is IO... Adding more hard drives will help
(generally speaking) than anything else. Of course that is assuming you
have enough RAM.

The other thing to remember is that you will need to run 7.4 to get
Opteron support so you may have actual database
migration issues if you are running 7.3 or previous.

Sincerely,

Does anyone have any information about 64 bit python support for Xeon and Opteron architectures on Windows platforms? If anyone has built the python runtime on either of these platforms before I would be really interested. Thanks.

Hi, Does anyone have any experience moving Postgresql from a 32 bit environment to a 64 bit environment? Was it worth it? Could a faster disk have helped instead? What about Opteron experience? -- Warmest regards, Ericson Smith Tracking Specialist/DBA

Our Database is having errors. We are currently using PostgreSQL to store 2.5 Million records per day. The average addition to our primary table is 4.5 Gigs of data. We are doing this on a dual Opteron 244 system with 1 TeraByte of HDD space. The drives are 250 Gig Western Digital. The Raid Controller is LSI Logic MegaRaid 150-6. We are getting an error after about 4-5 days worth of data being put into the system.

Some time ago, I asked about how well PostgreSQL scales with the number of processors in an Opteron system. To my surprise, no one seemed to know! Well, a couple of days ago, a shiny, new Celestica A8440 showed up at my office, so I decided to run it through the paces. Hopefully, this will be useful to someone else as well! Hello all, I was wondering what's best for PG, since we have to decide what will be the new server for our DB, that will serve one or more websites. Our actual configuration is a dual xeon 2.8ghz with 4Gb ram + scsi disks, and works fine, though some intensive insert/update processes has taken it to 100% cpu use.

Hi, I've setup a postgres server (7.4) and confirmed that SSL is enabled - I can successfully connect via tcp socket over SSL using the psql client. From PHP4, how can I get the pg_connect function to negotiate an SSL connection? I gather from researching the issue that pg_connect uses the same libraries as psql, so that this should be possible. But I've tried every syntax I can think of... the "options" parameter to pg_connect is...

We currently are running a data intensive web service on a Mac using 4D. The developers of our site are looking at converting this web service to PostgreSQL. We will have a backup of our three production servers at our location. The developers are recommending that I purchase a 2GHz Dual Processor G5 with between 2GB and 4 GB RAM. They say that this configuration would be able to easily run a copy of all three production servers. My...

Hi, i am wonderng what is faster according to accessing speed to read these data structure from the disk in c/c++ including alignment handling if we access it on little endian system 32 bits system + OS e.g. Windows, Linux, WinCE. I am not quite sure about the alignment of the memory.... soln. 1: should be faster, I am not sure. idx size (bytes) 1 4

Hi, I have been seeing a strange behaviour when doing some tests on a Dual - Dual Core Opteron system using Windows XP (32bits with SP2). In out application we have a wrapper around the thread pool to handle the work on renderers and CPU intensive tasks. On the Dual - Dual Core Opteron, the application is correctly starting 4 threads but it seems to be running only 2 concurrently.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
