Hello, I'm new to both PostgreSQL and psycopg and I'm trying to connect
to my database running on localhost. I have postgres setup to do md5
authentication and this works when using a db admin tool on my local
network. For some reason, psycopg fails with IDENT authentication.
>>> import psycopg
>>> psycopg.connect("dbname=jlowery user=jlowery host=localhost
password=XXX")
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<stdin>", line 1, in ?

I am trying to decide between using 1 account for web DB access, and doing
the auth myself, or using the database's built in auth. It's more steps to
use the database's, but its also more secure.
1st problem with using the DB's auth: We want usernames to be email
addresses, but it chokes on the @ sign:
# create user jh@paytimepayroll.com with password 'cow';
ERROR: syntax error at or near "@" at character 16
I can't figure out how to...

I am interested in finding out about Enterprise scale Postgres
installations and clustering, especially on Linux.
Essentially I would like to know the possibility that Postgres can store
the database data in a central location (ex: on a SAN fiber array) and
have a cluster of machines sharing processor/RAM/IO bandwidth to do the
application processing. Or perhaps there is another solution similar to
what www.emicnetworks.com have...

This thread was renamed. It used to be: "shared_buffers Question". The
old thread kind of died out. I'm hoping to get some more direction by
rephrasing the problem, along with some extra observations I've
recently made.
The core of the problem is that Postgres is filling up my hard drive
with swap files at the rate of around 3 to 7 GB per week (that's
Gigabytes not Megabytes) . At this rate it takes roughly two months to
fill up my 40...

Has anyone ever taken a look at adding radius authentication to
Postgresql? I know it's not terribly secure in itself, but some 2
factor authentication schemes like Cryptocard use it for verifying one
time passwords, and at least in our case having 2 factor
authentication for remote access would be really nice.

TIP 2: you can get off all lists at once with the...

Hello,
I've got a problem inserting binary objects into the postgres database.
I have binary objects (e.g. images or smth else) of any size which I
want to insert into the database. Funny is it works for files larger
than 8000 Bytes. If a file is less than 1000 Bytes I get the following
message:
Error message:
--invalid input syntax for type oid: "\074\077......";

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
