I need to add a column to a table. This table holds several thousand
records, has several indexes, and serves as the parent table to a few
child tables.
When I've done this in the past, it has taken quite a long time for
the ALTER TABLE command to complete.
So, what is the correct procedure for adding a column? Drop the
indexes, add the column, and recreate the indexes?
Thanks.

Can you be more explicit about "quite a long time".

I have some columns of data in SQL server that are of NVARCHAR(420)
format but they are dates. The dates are in DD/MM/YY format. I want to
be able to convert them to our accounting system format which is
YYYYMMDD. I know the format is strange but it will make things easier
in the long run if all of the dates are the same when working between
the 2 different databases. Basically, I need to take a look at the
year portion (with a SUBSTRING...

Hi All
I have a stored procedure with a temporary table that with two columns in
it. The first column contains 3 digit numbers and the second column some
descriptive data. I was wondering what the easiest way is to output the
first column. So far i was thinking along the lines of using a loop and
combining the first column together into a single variable to output of the
stored procedure but am unsure if this is the best way to do it ?...

Hi All
I am using a Global Temporary table in the Stored procedure and i am
creating index for a column in that temporary table. When i am executing
it. It is not taking that index. I checked using explain plan. But if i
run the runstats in the CLP for that temporary table it is taking the
index. How i have to implement in the Stored procedure itself?
Warm Regards

Hi,
I have a View which contains (of course) several columns. Now I want to make
a Stored Procedure that does a Select based on the parameters.
For exemple: One time I want to select all the reocrds with ColumnA = 'Value
A', an other time all the reords with ColumnB = 'An other value', a third
time all records with "ColumnA = 'Value C' AND ColumnB = 'this value'" etc
etc.

I have been busting my nut over this for pretty much most of the day and
it is driving me nuts. I posted this to an mySQL ng yesterday and I have
not had any response (I'm pulling my hair out here).
Its really a very simple stored procedure but I simply can't seem to get
it to work.
I have a simple table misc_data described as ff:

defining the columns). When I try to use labels I can display all...

Hi,
I have a database which contains alot of finacial data. I want to
retreive some data, run som calculations with it, nothing complex just
simple arithmetic.
I wonder if it's faster to let a stored procedure to do this or is
better (faster) to just retrive the data in a simple SELECT statement
and let the application do the calculation?

Hi all,
Following Ian's passionate postings on problems with ALTOBJ and the
alter table wizard in the control center I'll try to explain how to use
ALTOBJ with this thread. I'm not going to get into the GUI because it is
hard to describe in text.
First of all what is the purpose of ALTOBJ()?
This procedure was created mostly for ISVs who need to do produce change
scripts to upgrade application from release to release, but it can also

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
