Parent/Child Function

106 New Member
Hi, i really need help with This.

i have a table (category) which contains 3 fields :
cat_id
parent_cat_id
cat_name

i need to output for the admin all the parents and their childs in a drop down menu ...i searched alot and found a nice recursive function but dont know how to call it in PHP ( i never used functions in PHP )
here's the function :

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. function scantree($parent_id){
  2.                     echo hi;
  3.                     $query = "SELECT parent_cat_id,cat_name FROM category WHERE cat_id=$parent_id";
  4.                       $result = mysql_query($query);
  5.                         if (mysql_num_rows($result)>0){
  6.                               while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)){
  7.                                 print('<BR>'.$row['cat_name']);
  8.                             // recurse the function using self as root:
  9.                                   scantree($row['parent_cat_id']);
  10.                                                                       }
  11.                                                       }
  12.                                     }

You would call it like so
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. echo scantree($parent_id);
  2.
You would have to supply $parent_id though.
