Parent/Child Function

Hi, i really need help with This.

i have a table (category) which contains 3 fields :
cat_id
parent_cat_id
cat_name

i need to output for the admin all the parents and their childs in a drop down menu ...i searched alot and found a nice recursive function but dont know how to call it in PHP ( i never used functions in PHP )
here's the function :

function scantree($parent_id){ 
                    echo hi;
                    $query = "SELECT parent_cat_id,cat_name FROM category WHERE cat_id=$parent_id"; 
                      $result = mysql_query($query); 
                        if (mysql_num_rows($result)>0){ 
                              while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)){ 
                                print('<BR>'.$row['cat_name']); 
                            // recurse the function using self as root: 
                                  scantree($row['parent_cat_id']); 
                                                                      } 
                                                      } 
                                    }

You would call it like so

echo scantree($parent_id);
 

You would have to supply $parent_id though.
