Make fails on php4.3.8

RLP
When I try to do a "make" on php 4.3.8 after an apparently successfull
config I get a message as follows.
"ext/ctype/ctype.lo: file not recognized: file truncated"

It's a Redhat Fedora Core 2 system with Apache 2.0.49 and mySQL 4.0.20.

This is the first time I've tried to build all this stuff with
distributions from the respective groups rather than use whatever Redhat
supplies.

Anyone seen this glitch before or have any ideas?

Roger
