has anyone successfully run PHP installer on vista?

No,
I think they should take the W$ installer offline.
You should install PHP by hand on IIS, otherwise you loose the ability
to add dlls in php.ini.

That installer is evil.

ANd yes: I have PHP5 running on Vista 32 (Home Premium), and it runs,
except for a returning 'Worker thread died' message, that doesn't affect
PHP at all, but irritates the user of the machine.

Regards,
Erwin Moller

PS: I wrote down my experiences with Vista/PHP in this group. I think if
you google for my name and 'vista install php' you'll find them.

I filed a bug report:

http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=43748

Feel free to add feedback if you have the same problem.
The workaround that worked for me was launching the installer from an
elevated console. Find the Windows "Command prompt" icon, right-click on
it, select "Run as administrador" and grant permission when asked. Once in
the console, type something like:

msiexec /i C:\Path\To\File\php-5.2.5-win32-installer.msi

(You can autocomplete paths with the "Tab" key)

Ummm, yes, I have. You presumably mean the .msi file?
I installed

php-5.2.5-win32-installer.msi

on Vista Home Basic. It appears to be running with Apache (2.2.6)
(for which I also used the .msi installer file) alright.

Because I really didn't want Vista in the first place I've hacked it
as viciously as I can to stop it doing all the alleged security cr*p,
my user account is in the admin group (I think), and I've turned off
UAC. I think that's all I've done to it. But, as far as I remember,
I just ran the installer and it went straight through. I think it
even sorted out Apache so's it worked.

8-)

Mark
