Error 500 when trying to access exterior files

Ah, i'm in front of a puzzling thing: every function that access other
files (such as include, require, file or readfile) all give an evil
error 500 (the "internal server error" one). If it was giving a php
error, i could at least get a more explicit error message. Any idea of
what misconfiguration it could come from ? The guy got php 4.3, so
it's not a really old version. Ah, it's very frustrating to try to
develop things when even basic functions refuse to work :-(

What web server? If you are running PHP as a CGI on Apache, the web server
error log will have the error you are looking for.
