I'm trying to understand sessions and authentication.
I gathered that the only way of preserving data across script
invocations was to use a session. However I note that
$_SERVER and $_SERVER are also preserved
across invocations and even from one script to another. How does this
work? (Are they repeatedly sent from the browser every time? If so, what
stops a site author from collecting a user name and password originally

I'm trying to get PHP authentication (using the headers to request
authentication, and then checking $_SERVER and
$_SERVER) - however, no matter what I do, I can't seem to get
it to work. The login request box pops up fine, but when I enter the correct
details, it just pops back up again, and then again, before finally dumping
me at the authentication failed page. I've tried looking at phpinfo(), and

I've seen many references to the $_SERVER variable, which is set to
the string 'on' when the client is connected via HTTPS rather than regular
HTTP. However, I have been unable to find any references to it in the
official PHP documentation (many times in the user contributed notes,
though).

Hi,
I use basic authentication in Apache. I like to use the global variable
$_SERVER. Unfortunately this variable is empty/no
availabe. Same with PHP_AUTH_PW. AUTH_TYPE is working and states
"Basic". Can somebody help me with this?

I have a login that uses header information to authenticate users.
header('WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="my site", FALSE');
These values go into the php_auth_user and PHP_AUTH_PW in $_SERVER work
just fine. But when I try to unset($_SERVER) or PW
and go to a different page they are just reset to the way they were
before.
If you need more information let me know. Do I have to do more than

I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
