Displaying relationships graphically 'on the fly'...

53 New Member

I have a series of database tables in PostgreSQL that I am getting data from and displaying in the web browser (via PHP, SQL, etc.)

How about giving some details of what I am looking to do with a simple set of examples? (if you will forgive the verbosity.)
  • I have groups of employees assigned to just one training group - say 'truck drivers', 'shipping technicians', etc - a one to many

  • I have a series of modules, assigned to again just one module group - say 'Vehicles', 'Drug Testing', 'Pallet Safety', etc - again a one to many

  • The site admins use the existing functionality of the web site to, say, indicate that:
    1. employees listed in the training group 'truck drivers' need to do all of the modules listed under the 'vehicles' module group,
    2. ditto 'shipping technicians' for 'pallet safety', and
    3. all employees need to do the 'drug testing' modules

As mentioned this is all set up, both in the back end database and on the user interface; that is, I have already written the pages and associated code to populate the intermediate table that sets up these relationships - so these can be dragged out with SQL easily.

On one of the admin pages, I would love to be able to show the relationship of the records in the training group table to that in the module group table GRAPHICALLY 'on the fly' to better enable the admin user to see how they are related.

I envisage this as a sort of ERD, as it were (but rather than the database structural elements being the entities in the relationship diagram, I would want to show the varied training group <---> module group relationship as entities on the diagram.)

Any suggestions as to how? Some OS software out there that I can use PHP with?

I realise that the request is a bit esoteric, but wanted to get some input before I started investigating it further! :-)

Thanks in advance:

I prefer you should googled for your requirement. There are many on fly graphics generator classes/libraries available. Now you need to find out which one will suits you most. I had used pChart earlier.

Thank you...

I was aware of a lot of them from Googling, but was seeking specifics on one that does ERD-like diagrams...

I will definitely check out your suggestion to see if it can be adapted, thank you!

Aside - I have found JPGraph useful for my on-the-fly charting needs from PHP, recommended

Hi, I need to display a thumbnail of a large image that is contained in a database. I cannot upload a thumbnail into the database for various reasons. I have a function that resizes images before inserting into a database, and I know how to display image data from the DB into the browser so I have a rough idea of what's involved. My problem is that I need to get an image from the DB, resize down it and display it in the browser on the...

I have the following problem. I have a form created on the fly via a perl script that maintains a MySQL table. Any field that has spaces does not display properly. Only the text up to the first space displays in the HTML text box. If I use code that embeds the HTML space octet, it displays properly. I know it must be something really dumb. TIA for assistance

Hi, As I gain knowledge through a lot of trial, error, and usenet posts.. I have a potentially odd question. I am using a commercial access application. It is a front-end / back end....multi-user app. with a lot of complex functionality (as you would expect from a commercial app). It doesn't have any relationships though.....is this odd???

Hello, I'm wondering whats the best method to use for displaying several photos' thumbnails. One method I know is to dynamically resize the photo at the time the page is loaded. What does this do to server/site performance? The other is to copy the photo at time of upload and create a thumbnail then, have two separate images, therefor when displaying its just pulling the actual image. What do you think??

I've been reading up on Modified Preorder Tree Traversal and it's definitely ideal for the kind of tree structures I need to model for my company's multi-level sales hierarchy. I've implemented the database side already in SQL Server 2000 and can retrieve all child nodes based on the left and right IDs of the current node. My problem is displaying the tree so that correct indentation can be used to show the relationships between the...

I'm curious about your opinion on setting relationships. When I designed my first app in Access I'd go to Tools/Relationships and set the relationships. Over time I'd go into the window and see relationship spaghetti....tables/queries all overthe place with lots of relationship lines between here and there. After that first app I didn't do relationships. If I had a query, I defined the relationship. Many of the times when I create a...

I am writing a court booking system for 4 courts. The problem is I don't know how to render the table. I want each court as a column and I want time down the left hand side. Each court has a session duration of 40 minutes. The tricky bit is that each court's session starts 10 minutes after the previous court and I want to this overlapping to show graphically with a consistent time factor across all 4 courts. There is also a variable number...

I've moved all my tables to sql server2005 and I've created the appropriate relationships now I create links to two such tables that have a relationship into ms- acess97 but when I add the two tables to the 'relationship' window, it appears as though my odbc dsn link doesn't bring across the relationship(s), so I just see two tables sql server has a 'diagram' , is that the best tool, or is there another ms-product that works better ?

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
