help! strange preg_match no match problem!

Hi, All,
I encountered this strange problem while using function preg_match.
The following is the php code.
when I set the line:
$text = str_repeat('*', 12500);

preg_match will return 0 for the hard coded regular expression.

but if I set $text to 12499, it will return 1 for a match.
$text = str_repeat('*', 12499);

anybody know what's the problem?

Can't replicate. I get hits regardless of length:

I tried to use php to execute the script. It works!
However, when I open the same script (text length 12500) with a
browser (firefox or ie, via apache, lampp), it doesn't work (return
0).

Actually there is 2 version of php on my server.
php 4.2.2 returns 1 while
php 5.25 returns 0

the code is suppposed to be:
