I need to do in memory compression of text data before sending it over a
TCP connection. Zip is the old standby....but are there better...

Is it best practice to set Unicode Compression to "No" for memo fields in a
table? What about text fields?
According to the VB help entry:
"Data in a Memo field is not compressed unless it requires 4,096 bytes or
less of storage space after compression. As a result, the contents of a Memo
field might be compressed in one record, but might not be compressed in
another record."

Hi,
I'm running IIS with PHP 4.3.11 and I'm trying to get zip support working
correctly.
I have installed the appropriate dll, it shows zip support in phpinfo() and
the basic non-object-oriented zip functions work.. however, if I try to use
the zipAchive class for object-oriented zip functions, I just get this:
Fatal error: Cannot instantiate non-existent class: ziparchive

I compressed a file with GZipStream class and is larger than the original
file.... how can this be?, the original file is 737 KB and the "compressed"
file is 1.1 MB. Did i miss something or is normal with that compression class?

Hello,
I can successfully open and explore zip files using the ZipArchive
class provided by PHP 5.2.1, but I get an ER_NOZIP error when opening
large zip files. At least that appears to be the issue.
The zip files in question are over 2GB. The zip file is created with
the latest version of 7zip using the -tzip command line handle, and it
is readable by both 7zip and "Compressed File" that's built into Win-

Hello, we have an app that scans documents into TIFF format and we
need to transfer them over the internet. If anyone knows of a SDK we
can use that can compress TIFFs on the fly or even if it can compress
them so they take up less space on the server, would be appreciated.
Actually any info on handling tiff files programatically would be
appreciated as I know very little about tiffs.
