How to create a login page in PHP?

Hi Atli or any PHP expert,

Can you tell me what the following action code does?
I got it from the following post you have. I copied your example and saved it as test.html. I ran it and then it went nowhere after I pressed Login. Sorry I don't know anything about PHP. But I do need to set up password for a website and if the password matches then the user can proceed to another html. Can you help me?

As to your question.

If you are new to PHP, it may be a good idea to check out a PHP tutorial, just to get the basics before you start working with it. This one looks pretty good.

The $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] variable contains the path of the current page. That is, it contains a relative path to the page that you are on. So using it like I did in my article, it will have the form post it's data to the current page, effectively refreshing the page, sending along the form data.

Adding on from Atli's words,

You said you were using
[php]
<?php echo $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'];?>
[/php]
in a HTML page.

It might be worth/helpful/important to know php will not be parsed in a HTML page. Unless of course you have a setting which allows this.
