I was wondering how to connect to postgresql and sybase databases.
I'm assuming that I need to recompile php with the flags for both
Do I also need to install sybase and postgresql themselves first?
I know that mysql support is built in, at least into php 4.
could anyone point me to a good source of info on this

The official documentation at http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.pgsql.php
and http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.sybase.php should explain
everything you need.

For PostgreSQL, you need the pgsql extension included in PHP plus the
PostgreSQL client library libpq, the source of which is included in the
PostgreSQL distribution.
For Sybase, you have a few options, none as easy as PostgreSQL. The one I
use is FreeTDS, which provides the low-level library, along with the PHP
sybase_ct extension which is included in PHP. Others have used ODBC or some
Sybase-provided client libraries instead.

You might consider using a wrapper or abstraction layer to give you some
flexibility. I've had great success with ADODB http://adodb.sourceforge.net/
