Where's the error in my code?

Hello. I have a problem. I am a begginer in PHP. I wrote the code:

$variable=5;
$variable<10?  {$ans="less";
           echo $ans."<br>";
           echo "variable=".$variable."<br>";}:
           {$ans="more";
           echo $ans."<br>";
           echo "variable =".$variable."<br>";}
?>

I got a mistake on line 3. I don't understand where is the mistake?
Please help me.

If you have so many lines in the brackets, you may as well use the if statement, rather than the shorthand way.

the shorthand way could be something like:

echo $variable<10 ? "less<br>variable=".$variable."<br>" : "more<br>variable =".$variable."<br>";

obviously, this does not set the variable $ans.

If you still need the $ans variable set, then just use 'if' and 'else'

$variable=5;
if($variable<10)  {
    $ans="less";
    echo $ans."<br>";
    echo "variable=".$variable."<br>";
}
else {
    $ans="more";
    echo $ans."<br>";
    echo "variable =".$variable."<br>";
}
