Rossum's tutorial on Python states:
"open() returns a file object, and is most commonly used with two
arguments: 'open(filename, mode)'
mode 'r+' opens the file for both reading and writing."
Here's a little session in Python's interactive window
>>> f=open('mytext.txt','w+')
>>> f.write('My name is Bob')
>>> s=f.read()

Hello,
I am having a problem in which a file can get stuck open when a thread
that is attempting to write to it gets aborted (ThreadAbortedException
occurs). The log file gets stuck open until the process is shut down
(cannot delete file from Windows Explorer, for example). My test
application stops execution with:
An unhandled exception of type 'System.IO.IOException' occurred in
mscorlib.dll
Additional information: The process...

Hi,
I just found out that the general open file mechanism doesn't work
for named pipes (fifo). Say I wrote something like this and it
simply hangs python:
#!/usr/bin/python
import os

Hi,
Both way works, I'd just ask some experts which way is better?
My application creates a log file daily.
Now each time when I write a log, I will open the file and append to the
end. Ocz, if the file is not exist(e.g. another day), it will creates the
file first.

Does a py script written to open and read binary files on Windows affect
files on a Linux or Mac machine in a negative way? My concern is
portability and safety. I want scripts written within Windows to work
equally well on Linux and Mac computers.
Is this the safest, most portable way to open files on any platform:
fp = open(file_name, 'rb')
fp.close()

Hi,
Kindly excuse my novice question. In all the literature on ifstream
that I have seen, nowhere have I read what happens if you try to read
a binary file using the ">>" operator. I ran into the two problems
while trying to read a binary file.
1). All whitespace characters were skipped
2). Certain binary files gave a core dump

Hi,
is there a way to or at least a reason why I can not use tarfile to
create a gzip or bunzip2 compressed archive in the memory?
You might might wanna answer "use StringIO" but this isn't such easy
as it seems to be. ;) I am using Python 2.5.2, by the way. I think
this is a bug in at least in this version of python, but maybe
StringIO isn't just file-like enough for this "korky" tarfile module.
But this would conflict with its...

Hello all,
For some reasons, somewhere in a program, I'd like, if possible, to quickly
parse a whole file before rewinding it and letting the full analysis start.
My problem is that the FILE* I want do parse has been fopen'ed far away
from where I am and I don't know in which MODE my FILE* has been opened.
And additionally, my FILE* may not be a regular file, but a continuous

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...
