How to determine character encoding of a file?

I need a function to determine if a file is utf-8 encoded. I found the
inconv- and recode-functions. But they only seem to convert files. Isn´t
there any php-function similar to the 'file'-command on linux?

Hi there, Can anyone point out any really obvious flaws in the methodology below to determine the likely encoding of a file, please? I know the number of types of encoding is small, but that is only because the possibilities I need to work with is a small list. > private string determineFileEncoding(FileStream strm) > { > long originalSize = strm.Length;

Hi, I am loading a CSV file ( Comma Seperated Value) into a Richtext box. I have a routine that splits the data up when it hits the "," and then copies the results into a listbox. The data also has some different characters in it that I am trying to remove. The small a with two dots over it and the small y with two dots over it. Here is my code so far to remove the small y: Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal...

I am going to demonstrate my complete lack of understanding as to going back and forth between character encodings, so I hope someone out there can shed some light on this. I have always depended on the kindness of strangers... :-) I'm playing around with some very simplistic french to english translation. As some text to work with, I copied the following from a french news site:

Hi, I have an ASP.Net website, which allows users to upload a file which is then inserted into a database. This is all fine until it reads a line with the string +Anu in it. It transforms this to this char É» (which, if Googled for, is described as Unicode Character 'LATIN SMALL LETTER TURNED R WITH HOOK' (U+027B) or, in Phonetics, as a 'Retroflex approximant'.)

i have come across a situation in my project where i read a text file with some characters greater than hex 0x7f. i need to write character (0xE0) to a new file as an exception. however when i attempt to write this via "Console.Write" or "filestream.Write" it seems the value changes. most of the output file is in text mode. if i view the original file in binary mode i see the character i'm having issue with as "e0 00" but when i...

Hi all, I have an application that reads data in from a text file and stores it in a database. My problem is that there are some characters in the file that aren't being handled properly. For instance, one of the characters has an ASCII code of 150 (it looks like a dash '-'), when I'm debugging this character is displayed as the square box that Windows uses for unsupported characters and when it's copied to the database it's stored as...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
