Unix file commands using PHP's system function

11 New Member
Hi all!
I am confused as to how an old-good UNIX command, like

cat text.txt > new_tex.txt

can be used in PHP.
I tried
system (" cat text.txt > new_text.txt");

but it didn't work, the file new_text.txt was left blank.
Am I doing something wrong with the > ???
Must I use something else instead of 'system' ?

Heya, ktsirig.

Might be a permissions issue. Try this instead:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. copy('text.txt', 'newtext.txt');
  2.
Does the same thing, but without all the overhead of making a system() call. Plus, if anything goes wrong (such as 'permission denied'), PHP will throw a warning and let you know.

Hi, I have a question relating to how Unix commands can be issued from Python programs. Im am currently writing a large test script in python and I need this script to call three other separate Python scripts, where each one executes in it own thread of control. I would like to use a Unix command to get each script to run in its own shell. I have tried using the "Commands" module but after I issue the first "command", execution blocks...

So, I'm recording the timestamp from some unix files. Any opinions as to whether it's best to use a "bigint" (which matches the file system data) or a "timestamp" (which might be easier to manipulate in the database)? TIA! Mark --

All, I am currently developing an FTP class in VB.NET. It's kid tested, mother approved when trying to access an FTP Server on a Windows box meaning I can connect, run commands, upload and download a file no problem. My issues come when I try to use the same class with the same commands to access an FTP server on a UNIX box. I can connect and login just fine, but after that all my commands come back "500 'PWD': command not understood."....

Hi, I'm having difficulty finding any previous discussion on this -- I keep finding people either having problems calling os.exec(lepev), or with using python's exec statement. Neither of which I mean here. Just for a moment, let's just take one definition for one of the

I'm developing a web site in PHP for an Apache server. I have a particular stand-alone application that takes a text file as input, and produces a text-file as output. It's usually run from the Unix command line. I'd like my PHP code to provide the input text file, run the stand-alone application, and then read the output text file and reformat it for display on the site. Is there a way for my PHP app, to cause this Unix command-line...

In most modern distributions of Linux and Unix (at least ones with graphical environments like KDE, Gnome or XFCE), you get to mount your partitions easily from the desktop. In some cases however, it isn't that easy. Note, that all of these commands have to be run in a terminal as root user. To open a terminal (sometimes called a console), either press ALT+F2 and type xterm (alternatives could be konsole or terminal) or press CRTL+ALT+F1 to...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
