Help/Suggestions for Building a Web Community

Hi,

Sorry for the extreme newb question, was hoping for some insight. I'm
trying to find the right package from which to build a psychology web
community. There are so many bad ones out there, I'm hoping to put
something together that will have some staying power. I've played
around with phpBB, but don't have a feel for whether or not it is my
best option. I have some quasi technical skills but no coding or
development experience, so I won't be able to do much custom work
myself.
I'd like to accomplish the following:
1) have a top frame with one or several customizable news feeds, such
as google news filtered by key works, or other rss feeds. (would like
to include things like a 'discuss' link that would like to an
appropriate forum topic.

2) a frame with blog

3) Forums - ideally I would like the option of whether or not the users
will require registration. Preferably no registration for starters.
I'd really like this to be slick - there are very few psychology
related forums with consistent, quality visitors.

4) Customizable skins - something that doesn't look like it's an out of
the box package

That's about it. Anyone have any thoughts on the best way to get this
going? Limited budget, but could invest some money if i found exactly
what I was looking for. Would also be interested in hearing estimates
from developers if you think you could bang something like this out
fairly easilly,

Thanks!

I would stay away from phpBB. It has a very poor track record when it
comes to security.

One package I've heard good comments about is Beehive. There's is also
Mercury board and Agora.

I have had a reoccurring issue with movement to C# and I was wondering if any C# gurus can give me any suggestions to this problem. Lately I have be running into companies with large c++ code repositories that are interested in leveraging the power of C# development. However Throwing away the c++ code is just not an option. Most of this is in regards to the gaming industry where the base C++ code needs to be run on something like a...

I have just had to upgrade to Access 2003 as Access 97 EMail (SendObject) doesn't work when loaded on Windows XP. I'm finding my way around Access 2003 but my biggest problem is getting information. When I bought Access 1.0 many years ago, I got a paper manual and an excellent help file with all you needed to know. With Access 97 the manual came as a 'Building Applications' document on the CD and I still had the excellent help. With Access...

Greetings, I have have been working for almost 18 months on a set of WebControls where some are similar to the ASP.NET standard and well-enhanced while other controls are completely new and interesting. All my controls are implemented from scratch (in VB.NET). Some are C#, er I plan to have a second copy. I'm more productive in VB.NET (mainly because of the better intellisense support -- yes, I rely on it because I don't remember...

How would I go about using a custom select string that is passed from a form to the SelectCommand parameter of SqlDataSource? I tried: SelectCommand = "<% Request.Form("hdnSelect") %>" but I got an error about putting <% %> tags in a literal. I tried taking out the quotes (the " ") and it didn't do any good. I'm trying to use the built in ASP.NET 2.0 DataList control, but I haven't come up with anything.

I have encountered a perplexing problem while trying to build an application, and I need some help in fixing my build environment to get it to compile. I am running Whitebox Linux 3 (similar to Redhat Enterprise Linux 3) to build a midi application, and I am getting an "undefined reference" error during linking. The error is saying that it cannot find a symbol which was already compiled and linked from another part of the application. ...

Hello, Let me simply explain what I'm trying to do and maybe it will make sense. I think it's a fairly easy thing, but I've been looking at the DB too long. Any suggestions are welcome. I've got an tblAsset that has a list of assets. The key field is obviously Asset Number which will be unique to each record. What I am needing to do is pull up an Asset, and add assets under that one particular assets. Example, I have a building...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
